Are we required to give up meat on Fridays in the US?

the issue of friday penance is one of the authority of the church to recomend or mandate discipline. those who disobey, the sin is not in the eating but in disobedience.

As an aside, many of the Eastern Catholic churches do mandate abstinence from meat (and sometimes other items, like milk and eggs) on fridays, and often on another day as well, during the great fasts. Even in the US.

In the Ruthenian Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh, also known as the American Byzantine Catholic Church, no meat on wednesdays nor fridays during Philips’ Fast, Great Lent, Peter and Paul’s fast, and the Dormition fast, but other penance may be substituted outside of these, or by the eparch for good reason.

The Coptic Christians (originally from Egypt) only have about 55 days of the year when they can eat whatever they want.

I think no meat on Fridays is easy compared to that!
