Are we supposed to abstain on Sundays in Lent?

Please help to settle a disagreement between a friend and me. My friend says that when
making a Lenten resolution at the beginning of lent (i.e, giving up chocolate), that since
Sunday is a day of rest we can have that which we “gave up” on Sunday’s. I say it is for all of lent. Who is correct?
