Are we supposed to do penance on Fridays that fall on solemnities?

I understand that although Catholics are no longer required to abstain from meat on Fridays outside of Lent, we are still supposed to offer a penance of some sort.
Does this apply on solemnities like today, being the Sacred Heart of Jesus, or other “solemnities” when they fall on a Friday (eg, if Assumption is on Friday) or onEaster Friday (Friday of the octave of Easter)?
My understanding is that a solemnity, being the highest level of feast, is just like a Sunday and so it would be inappropriate to fast or do penances on that day–not that you can’t still do those of course, but as a rule, should a Catholic still offer some specific penance or sacrifice on Fridays when they are solemnities?
