Are we uncomfortable with silence?

Personally I love silence and would welcome more of it in the world, but also realise that I have to be realistic living in a city, well in the outer part of it. But in my room there is no sound unless I am watch a tv program and when it is finished back to silence. I can’t stand ‘background noise’ . When I visit my brother he has the tv on with music or something constantly…makes me nuts. One noise I can stand though is the sound of the sea, I can sit listening to it and praying for ages, I find it peaceful.
I do agree silence is within and everyone can find it if you learn too but I enjoy silence outside too.
I’d certainly like to see more of it in our church, but again realistically people can’t all be silent as some are hard of hearing and their whisper is a another persons shout and likewise with people stumbling in etc. But during Adoration I do think more effort should be made than is the current norm and after mass people should go out into the foyer before beginning chatting. It depends on the church but in my church it is quite social and that how it was when I moved here so I think I just have to delve into the inner silence.
 
I love silence. I work in an open plan office where people shout across desks and generally make a lot of noise, so much so that my ear defenders only muffle the worst of it. I love the silence and peace in church, but have to admit that I am not silent before or during mass nowadays. I don’t like to talk just before or during mass but cannot avoid it as it is all mass related. It is basically down to too few folks undertaking ministries, being a children’s catechist and our priest’s expectations. If I am silent in mass, then some of our first Holy Communion Prep children will be noisier and pay less attention.
 
I will admit that silence is hard for me. Silence is when I feel like intrusive thoughts bother me the most… but, I do actually like the silence of Holy Hour which is nice 🙂
 
I find when I am the farthest away from God; not going to Mass regularly, not praying, etc., I can’t stand silence. I guess it’s because I need something on to block the noise of my conscience. I agree that Mass should be as quiet as possible, mine is usually, so I’m thankful.
 
I love silence. I am very comfortable with it. My church doesn’t seem as noisy as people report here; however, the one time I would LOVE silence is right after Communion. I can’t stand that there has to be a song here when a lovely period of silence would encourage prayer.
 
My daughters’ Godfather went to St. Meinrad! He is a wonderful priest
 
We live in Missouri now, but we were stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY for several years. The Diocese of Owensboro has wonderful Holy priests. I know a few who attended St. Meinrad.

I grew up near Lexington, KY. I still dream of the horse farms. Beautiful state! Hope to return someday
 
My pet peeve is music during the Eucharist. I’ll never change this status quo, so I’ll have to accept it.

I grew up with silence during Eucharist and miss the practice. It’s really hard to focus and pray with Marty Haugen pop blaring in the background.

I do think that we’re a culture that gets nervous with silence.
 
I love that book! It has very important points to make . I like that I can open it to any page and there is wonderful direction in it about the power of silence.
 
I have trouble with silence in the car. I’ll switch from radio station to station. Usually there’ll be a rock’n’roll song I like but it’ll have some immoral theme within it so I’ll have to switch it, then again, there are lots of songs like that, though not all, then there’ll be someone talking about something with an obvious agenda, so I’ll have to switch that, and by the time I switch it to the Catholic radio I’m out of range, and then I’ll get mad at myself for not being able to handle silence and for not saying the rosary every day like I should.

My two cents.
 
That can change over time! Try a decade of the Rosary, and also just plain talking to the Lord. He hears everything! Your prayers will have an effect little by little, and then you won’t even want to try the radio!
