Are you a housewife?

Yup. That’s me!

What do I do all day? Hmmm…well, I do a lot of dishes, laundry, cooking, shopping, changing diapers, cleaning up spills, cleaning up “accidents”, reading to my kiddos, playing with them, driving them to various appointments, etc. I also volunteer at the preschool. My husband is the sole provider and he’s quite good at it…though I could do a better job of staying within budget!!

I don’t think either of us would change it, honestly. At one point, after my husband had been laid off, I asked him if it was time for me to get a job and his response was a resounding NO. We both feel very strongly that having me home with the kids–especially in their first years–is extremely important.

I do wish, sometimes, that there was some position that I was qualified for, that would allow me to work in those hours when I’m not needed at home so much, so that we could afford to send our kids to parochial school, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for now anyway.

I don’t really mind any label … but none of them really fit our family

If I’m a housewife, I’m married to a … househusband? We both do precious little around the house . And my husband, being the tidier one, tends to do a bit more, but I’m the chef.

‘Loafers’ is a better label for the two of us, although we both ‘work’, sort of, for our money - I get a grad scholarship and he is a rock musician. We have little money, but we really don’t care, as we don’t need much. We both get to spend most of our time with our daughter, and there is no need for any resentment either way.

How I would love to be a housewife! I love being domestic, and sometimes I feel as if I can’t really take care of my husband the way I would like to (we have no children). Yep - I’m totally the type who fixes my makeup before he comes home and likes to have things in order around the house. I would love to be able to have dinner ready so we aren’t eating at 8pm all the time. etc…

Alas - I have to work outside the home so we have health insurance and the ability to save for retirement and fix up the ol’ homestead a bit. He works for a non-profit and is not paid what he’s worth (we are totally ok with this though), so I make up for that, actually I make twice his salary.

But man I’d love to be a housewife, and I have absolutely no problem at all with that title.
