Are you allowed to sprinkle the ashes of the deceased?

I was watching the movie the “The Way” and I was curious about the spreading of the ashes of your loved one. The Church requires that the ashes all remain together and be buried. Is different when you are on pilgrimage to a holy site such San Santiago de Compostela?
