This is really interesting to me. I can see why Protestants would convert to Catholicism or Orthodoxy, because of Apostolic Succession, what made you switch?

I became Orthodox over 30 years ago. I am a member of the local Melkite parish because it’s the healthiest spiritual environment I’ve experienced, though with the Priest’s knowledge, I still self-identify as Orthodox (as do many of the parishioners).

I’ve also gathered that the distinction between Melkite and Orthodox (or, indeed among the other ancient Apostolic Christians) in the Middle East is rather fluid.

I converted three years ago back in 2006 My date of reception was Pentacost Sunday, I was raised by an Anglo Irish German father and a French Italian Spanish Austrian Roman Catholic Mother they both were from branches of the Hapsburg families. My Mother’s family is very RC and my Dad’s family is very Lutheran/Presbyterian , and I was stuck in the middle. What got me interested in HMC was living in San Diego as a child and going on holiday with my parents visiting all the cultural sites in California which included the Old Spanish Missions, I instantly fell in love with them as I could feel a genuine inner peace there which I noticed as young as 8 or 9 years old. I also did a lot of reading on RCC my best source was a series of books by a Fr Lax published in the 1920’s , the other reason for conversion was an inner quest for spiritual knowlege which I had sensed was absent in most of the protestant churches I was familiar with through family and friends, the other big item in my conversion was EWTN and continual prayers from my Catholic relatives. As I grew older and thought I knew everything I drifted away from any religion. I was in my thirties when I became interested in becoming Russian Orthodox. I read about it and decided to study with a priest and then I became Orthodox after much thought. I really believed it was the true church, but several years into it (and I do mean several) I kept remembering Catholicism. I was Russian Orthodox for 28 years. I started going to Mass again and last year I found a priest who agreed to let me give a Profession of Faith. Every other parish had said that I needed to go through RCIA. Last year I became Catholic and I am so glad I did and I wish I had done it sooner. In my heart I knew that the Catholic Church was the true church and Catholicism was right for me.

Any particular reason why you apparently joined the Latin rite instead of one of the corresponding Byzantine Churches?

I chose the Latin rite (or maybe it chose me a long time ago). This is lot more than I care to get into on this level. I made the choice, I didn’t want to be in the corresponding Byzantine church. I hold no ill will towards the Orthodox or any corresponding Byzantine church. My journey to reach the place I am at now took many years.

i grew up in a home of a non-practicing roman catholic father and a non-practicing lutheran mother and i was raised baptized and confirmed in the episcopal church. drifted away from church in 1970 and didn’t begin to really consider church again until about 1992.
my aunt and uncle were Catholic and i had attended church with them a few times as a child when we visited them in Kansas City. i had my grandmother’s rosary and i guess i began to wonder what the difference was between being Catholic and Episcopalian and why i wasn’t raised in the Catholic church. i began to study more about the Church of England and the Episcopal Church and studied more about catholicism and read and learned Catholic prayers and taught myself the Rosary. the journey took about 12 years before i finally converted. my one year anniversary as a Catholic will be in July.
my only disappointment is that i see many Catholics who really don’t believe in many of the teachings of the Church and in my opinion, really belong in the episcopal church. i thought that i was leaving a lot of controversy behind by joining the Catholic church, but i see there are many underlying issues in the American Catholic church and it is facing many of the same problems as the episcopal church, only that it has the history and tradition and a stronger anchor in the Pope as the head of the church as opposed to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

I was a Latin Catholic for 48 years. Raised all three children in the Faith and buried my parents through the church.

I joined a Ruthenian Catholic parish for five years, then became Eastern Orthodox.

I’ve seen the stories of Magadan, Mickey, and others here quite frequently in my lifetime.

I’ve noticed a few posters convert from catholicism to Holy Orthodoxy. Open question, why the change? Tradition, theology, other?

This is the Eastern Catholicism forum and by placing the thread here it is understood that the context is the East; however, when it is the top post in the forum and shows on the CAF main page, people might not notice which forum it is in and only respond to the question of being a convert. Most posters on CAF are Roman Catholic, which means the thread could easily become an Apologetics thread instead of an Eastern Catholicism thread. To maintain what I assume was the original intent by placing it here, I added the word Eastern to the title.
