Are you appalled by the amount of foul language often heard on scripted shows made for basic cable these days?

I cannot think of a curse word that begins with “s” and I thought I’d heard them all!

Unless you mean a coarse word, a slang term for excrement.

“Appalled” is a little strong, because it implies some amount of surprise. More disappointed, I guess?

There are those who are dedicated to including foul language in scripted shows. They think people will somehow get used to it.

Yes, of course. Everything must be contaminated. I have thrown out 3 or 4 books after removing pages and covers because the authors decided they had the ability to add such language.

The radio in my car stays off. Contemporary music is bad.

0, Father! Where’s my smelling salts…

Yes, it bothers me to an extent, whether it’s basic cable (which we don’t have anymore), Netflix, Amazon Prime, or whatever.

It doesn’t disturb me. It is part of certain cultures. If I am interested in conversation as a whole, I will continue to listen. If I am not interested, I will change the channel.

Nope. Programs that don’t use at least a little profanity seem unrealistic, as this is how people in the real world speak.

I feel the same way about programs that refuse depicting alcohol and tobacco consumption. People in the real world swear, smoke, drink. Does being Christian automatically require people to be easily offended?

Perhaps it is because I am from Texas, but I have never known people to swear as much as it happens in programming today, even kids. I do not see all this stuff as realism at all, but as provocation. It also is terrible writing. Profanity used constantly does not add realism, but detracts from it. To use the example above, the statement by Butler would be greatly harmed by his constant swearing throughout Gone With the Wind.

Yes, luckily I watch very little tv. I don’t watch ‘cable’ as you call it really anyway as it’s just dire anyway regardless of language the content is mostly just not worth it in my opinion (not in the same country as most of you). I watch on demand tv if there anything I can find to watch and then yes the language is often appalling (but you can forward wind through it of theres a lot but then you may as well just stop the show) but speaking for this side of the pond, it is often how people really speak, though you dont have to promote it. I would rather not see the worst of people on tv thank you very much, how about their best. Way too much reality on tv…Pass. Also it is only how people who are not practising the love of God speak, so it is very sad… the decline of society. I prefer to pick period dramas or the like I find. Finding something non offensive is a constant challenge.

Foul language is really unpleasant to hear. Why would it make speech more realistic?

I voted appalled, not because I watch tv and am appalled, but because of the casual use of vulgarities that exists nowadays altogether.

And your comment bears that out. When I was young, people worked at not cussing (using vulgarities), especially in certain situations. Now it seems like the word “the,” ubiquitous.

A sad part of what is happening 😦
