Are you disappointed that the Feast of Ascension has been moved to a Sunday?

It always make me wonder why the Feast of Ascension was moved to a Sunday in our diocese. We have no shortage of priests and celebrating a week day Holy day mass of obligation doesn’t seem to be as much as a problem here. I truly believe if people wish to comply with a Holy Day mass they will make every effort to attend. They can make it to ballgames, meetings, movies, restaurants during the week…I am sure they can also do the same for mass. What do you think?

I only knew of it in school and at home as “Ascension Thursday”.
I will attend the TLM that still celebrates it as such, on THURSDAY.

And, NO I will not “get with it”!

And, yes, Church discipline CAN be ill conceieved.

BUT, that would reveal you to the world as CATHOLIC by leaving work to attend a Holy day Mass on a THURSDAY!

Nearly all prot churches, except maybe Hi-Anglican will be empty and closed.

The Bishop of the Diocese can decide when the Feast is celebrated. In my Diocese it is still observed on Thursday.

In His Peace!

CHRISTOS VOSKRES!
VO ISTINU VOSKRES!

I’m not upset at all. The Eastern Rites have NOT moved the Feast of the Ascension, we’re still celebrating on Thursday!:yup:

Don’t forget that Christmas is Jan 4th next year since all y’all moved the Feast of the Annunciation…:dancing:

It has been? Shhhhhhh don’t tell my traditional priest!

I’m not disappointed, more bewildered and confused.

I could understand this happening in a mission parish or any community without a resident priest. But across a whole diocese? Gives the impression that one only has to be Catholic on Sundays. :banghead:

So that’s why my son’s Catholic middle school scheduled his band concert this Thursday. Or was Ascension Thursday changed to Ascension Sunday in order to make way for school band concerts???

This kind of idiotic deference to modern culture is VERY disappointing. But it doesn’t surprise me in the least.

The diocese here is celebrating it on Thursday. I plan on going to the vigil mass tonight.

It’s still Thursday in my parish. And in the event I don’t get to go to one of my parish’s Masses, the church in the town where I work has four Masses scheduled!

Frankly, I’m more frustrated with Rome for pushing this mess of a situation upon us rather than just extending the indult for the Western dioceses, as the USCCB originally requested.

As a wannabe Byzantine, I will be making every effort to go to Divine Liturgy on Thursday evening. Unfortunately, having just been in the hospital, I have missed two rehearsals for the opera which opens Saturday night. I’m not sure how willing the director will be to release me on Thursday night so that I may attend Divine Liturgy. If, for some reason, I cannot be released (yes, that’s really how it works), I will be very grateful that the wacky Latin bishop here decided to move the obligation to Sunday. I suspect that my obligation for the feast will not be fulfilled if I just go to a morning Mass on Thursday NOT celebrated for the Ascension. Am I correct to assume this?

Thankfully our Parish and Diocese ] celebrates it on Thursday as normal 😃

I’m back from the Vigil Mass and in fact , between the 2 Churches in our Parish , we have more masses than on a weekend.

Thank goodness for some folk who celebrate things on the correct day/date.

It’s not often I get to laugh at my American accquaintances on here…but guess where I will be tomorrow night!

**Mass of the Ascension of Our Lord, Jesus Christ!- Thursday 5 May 7.30pm. **
Hee Hee, sorry you guys have to get it on Sunday, but hey…i agree with the guy who said its an opportunity to spend more time in church…i love Holy Days!

We’re a mission diocese, so ours has been transferred. 😦
Frankly I don’t think it would’ve been that tough for most of the parishes to have had mass or a vigil mass . . . but bishop says.

I am disappointed. I too, feel that Holy Days are worth any extra effort needed to be at Mass. (I’m in Memphis, TN)

I am very disappointed. Homiletic & Pastoral Review not long ago had a wonderful article on making more of our Catholic identity, even to the point of not working on days like Ascension Thursday and All Saints Day. Can you imagine the effect of a voicemail message that read, “I am out of the office today for the Feast of All Saints, I will return November 2nd.” We need MORE Catholic distinctiveness rather than assimilating into the secular culture at every turn.

Yes. I am extremely disappointed about this. But the decision has been made; it is out of my control.

Yes, I miss Ascension Thursday.

The feast remains on Thursday in Nebraska and much of the northeast, I believe, but has been moved to Sunday for much of the USA.

I’m lucky, we still have it on a Thursday. Now we just need to move Corpus Christi back to the Thursday after Holy Trinity Sunday and Epiphany back to January 6th.
