I’ve been neglecting my Spiritual Reading lately and was just wondering if others have fallen into the same bad habit……

I probably should have made it a bit clearer…I read Scripture daily too …but I guess what I was looking for is if you are reading spiritual books on the Faith, lives of the saints, etc., etc.

Hi Annunciata!

Yes, I have returned to spiritual reading and must start ‘studying’ John of the Cross. I have been led to this spirituality over 20 years ago…and the Lord is nudging me to return!

I have tried to cut back on the computer though…

Well I have a couple of books which I have read St John of the Cross and St Teresa of Avila. Which I have read.

I have over books on various saints of what the achieve in the lives which I have read over the years.

I made a feeble atempt at John of The Cross in my younger years …need to go back and read it again…and have read Teresa of Avila’s -The Interior Castle…I’ve just begun to read Saints in The World by Jesus Urteaga…

…the Lord is nudging me to return!

I have tried to cut back on the computer though…

He is more than nudging me…I literally got hit on the head w/ the book I’m reading right now… My big screen TV was broken for 2 weeks so I had to watch my EWTN in the bedroom and I reached above on my bookcase headboard for a Rosary and this book * Saints In The World* fell on my head!
I opened it and realized that it was one that had been assigned to me over a year ago by my SD and I thought I lost it! Sooo…I’m taking this as my “Q” to get moving …:yup:

I keep the poetry of the English Jesuit Gerard Manly Hopkins in my desk at work - Hold them cheap may who ne’er hung here…and then there are the daily readings in the Liturgy of the Hours. We had a good Catholic bookstore here but it closed. B & N is just too hit and miss.

Thanks to all the recommendations here, I have a two-foot stack of books - I’m reading about five or six, skipping around. Nearly done with Father Groeschel’s Healing the Original Wound. Working on Story of a Soul, Imitation of Christ, The Art of Loving God, the Catechism and pre-reading “Real Love” for my daughter. (I think it might be a bit old for her, but I might give it to her, anyway. She’s rather mature for her age and I think I’d rather give it to her a little before she’s ready than wait until it’s too late. She really liked Jason Evert’s book.)

My husband comes home and there are piles of books all over his side of the bed, laying face-down and opened to hold my place. He’s very good natured about it though - he’ll say, “Wanna come help me move the library so I can go to bed?”

And I’ve got another order on the way! It’s probably normal for a new convert, though, don’t you think? I mean, I feel like a sponge. I can’t get enough of it, I can’t read enough - so much inspiration, so little time!

Yes, the Lord has a way of doing this…sense of humor He does have!

Actually, my SD never recommends me reading any book…as I read the books for HIM…so then he can turn around and recommend them…:whacky:

When I went to do my novena for Divine Mercy, and when I went to confession (I did not know him), he told me to read the Diary Of St Faustina. I wasn’t too pleased as I read it twice…but then, it became a true blessing to read it over the third time. I have lots of work to do…:bowdown:

Yes, ElizabethJoy (beautiful name by the way) it is very normal to want to soak as much as you can. And you need not be a convert, a revert will do…

I remember myself those days…I couldn’t get enough in me. It was like falling in love all over again. It doesn’t help that I love to read also.

But you vill balance out and you will end up taking the time to meditate on the stuff you read until you assimilate it. I just finished also ‘Arise from Darkness’ by Fr B. Groeschel. It belong to my SD. I do his reading also…

Elizabeth…you bed sounds like our bed…that’s why the book I’m currently reading hit me on the head…we have books piled at least two high on our bookcase headboard…and even higher on our end tables!!!
Though I am a convert to the Faith, when I experienced this new found ‘deepening of my Faith’…(“Love Affair” for the Lord… if you will dear Shoshona) there wasn’t enough time in the day to read, read, read…listen to tapes…religious music…!
Just keep up what you are doing it’s so wonderfully refreshing!

I read everyday. Don’t be discouraged if all you have time, energy or heart for is one sentence. Try a chapter, paragraph or sentence at a time but make it a part of your day. When you are finished reading spend your silent time in thought and pray about what your read.
I have a stack of 5 books I take a small bite out of everyday.

I would like to read a complete edition of the “Glories of Mary” - my copy is incomplete, for reasons best known to the translator​

I have a copy of “All for Jesus” which I am just getting back to - and there are some wonderful Puritan books, such as:

Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices

The Sinfulness of Sin

The Mystery of Providence

Two of my favourites are Alexander Whyte’s “Bible Characters”: he takes 159 characters from the Bible - including 33 from the Parables - from Adam, to the Angels of the Seven Churches.

To quote: “Among his publications are Characters and Characteristics of William Law (1893) ; Bunyan Characters (3 vols., 1894) ; Samuel Rutherford (1894) ; An Appreciation of Jacob Behmen (1895) ; Lancelot Andrewes and his Private Devotions (1895) ; Bible Characters (7 vols., 1897) ; Santa Teresa (1897) ; Father John of Cronstadt (1898) ; An Appreciation of Browne’s Religio Medici (1898) ; Cardinal Newman, An Appreciation (1901).”

IOW, he had a remarkable range of sympathies, from the Non-conformist Bunyan by way of Rutherford (a fellow-Presbyterian), Behmen (a Lutheran) & Andrewes, Browne & Law (an Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, & two Anglican laymen), to a Cardinal and two Saints: one Orthodox & one Catholic.

Yes I do…I read my bible, and it counts for me as I’ve only been back home for a year…I’m reading the “Handbook for Todays Catholic”, Pillar of Fire Pillar of Truth, Meeting Mary Our Mother In Faith.

This past year I have read:
The Whole Truth About Fatima. Science and the Facts
The Whole Truth About Fatima. The Third Secret
The Whole Truth About Fatima. The Secret and the Church.
Fatima: Tragedy and Triumph.

Plus I read all the internet Catholic Links.

Keeps me busy.

Unless CAF counts, I am :nope: not doing very well…It has been horribly hot & humid, & the computer is right next to the air conditioner, which has increased the temptation.
I have been doing well with the Bible, because I signed up to have a chapter in the NT emailed to me every day…

Shoshana, I just love Father Groeschel - Arise From Darkness and Stumbling Blocks and Stepping Stones are on my wish list!

And I have a special devotion to St. Faustina and the Divine Mercy. It was reading an excerpt from Divine Mercy on the internet that caused me to finally “tip over” and say, “Okay, that’s it - I want this!” after so many years of rejecting Christianity. It was such a profound and instantaneous change in my thought and emotions. A complete shift in perception. St. Faustina’s Diary was one of the first books I ordered and I include the chaplet of Divine Mercy in my prayers every day.

Annunciata, I’ve been kidding about God thumping me on the head - guess I should stop saying that because it sure looks like sometimes He actually DOES THAT!

We’re going to be buying a new bedroom set soon and I am definitely going to look for a bookcase headboard. I’d forgotten how wonderfully handy those things are!

Annunciata…love affair??? Nah…this is what the Lord wants from us…you know the bible verse…He kissed me with the kiss of His mouth…

He even calls us His spouses…how much better is that? :dancing:

Give Him praise that is His due…for all this wonderful love affairs come from Him, and Him alone! Praise and glory to Him for ages upon ages…:bowdown:

I have fallen into the bad habit too. For me, too much time playing computer games or visiting websites that are time wasters at best or sinful at worst contribute to this. In some ways it was better when I did have my internet access in the library since it would help me to spend my limited time online wisely. Also, since the computers were in public view, I would be less likely to wonder off too sinful websites.
