Are You Doing Your Spiritual Reading?

I wish there were enough time in the day for all the reading I would love to do. I am rarely without a book. I just finished “On Being Catholic” and it was wonderful. I alternate religious books with secular books. I just ordered St. Therese Of Liseaux’s book. And I have about 30 books waiting in the wings. I sure hope they have a library in heaven!

Yup:yup: , reverts do the same!!! I’ve been reading Elisabeth Lesseur’s journal lately. I’ve also read the lives of the following Saints: St. Monica, St. Augustine, and St. Therese of Lisieux. Over the past year, I’ve also read books by Karl Keating, Patrick Madrid, and Jeff Cavins. I try to read Scripture every day, and have begun a self Bible Study (that I’ve been a little lazy about:( ). I just feel like I’m on fire to learn more and read more!!!

CA Forums has become a little addictive (like some other posters have pointed out). I’ve been really cutting back, but ooohhh, it’s so hard!

Now, the hard part, putting everything I’m learning and reading about into action.

I read everyday. Don’t be discouraged if all you have time, energy or heart for is one sentence. Try a chapter, paragraph or sentence at a time but make it a part of your day. When you are finished reading spend your silent time in thought and pray about what your read.
I have a stack of 5 books I take a small bite out of everyday.

Just a note on this too…Even if you limit yourself to 15 minutes a day… This is so hard for me, but it’s part of my discipline …

Unless CAF counts, I am :nope: not doing very well…It has been horribly hot & humid, & the computer is right next to the air conditioner, which has increased the temptation.
I have been doing well with the Bible, because I signed up to have a chapter in the NT emailed to me every day…

Not that I’m advocating that…but I guess where there is a will; there is a way…😉 Sometimes I have a hard time reading small print …I especially like reading the Encyclicals on-line…
 
I am a bit supprised that no one has mentioned The Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis, I have read many other spiritual books including St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Thomas Aquinas, etc. but this is the one book I come back to and reread over and over again.

“The Little Flower” loved it too… I read it many years ago…so many , many books I have read and have yet to read…
 
I pray the “Hours” and the Office of Readings is my favorite “Hour”
 
But for Grace:

My Father died last March and as we were sorting through his stuff we found two copies of the "Imitation of Christ’. My Mom had bought two copies of it in 1942 when Dad went off to war. He took one and she kept one. One of the copies was dog eared and had obviously been read cover to cover many times. The other was in prisitne condition. The one that was in prisitne condition was the one my Dad took to war!
 
I could imagine how hard it would be to try to keep your faith during war. (personally I lean towards a conciensious objector, I really don’t think that I could fight and kill someone in cold blood like that.) It is also could be a matter of diffrent tastes.

Anyway, I love used books, especially bibles and the like. It is fascinating to see what other people keep coming back to, and what bears them up in time of crisis.

My Father was the most Spiritual man I knew and Mom says he was the same way in the war. As he explaned she was far away and worried to death about her fiancee. The book offered her comfort. he was in the midst of it and firmly believed he was in Gods hands. I think war can often be as rough or rougher for those left at home while thier loved ones are in harms way.
 
I am reading DeMontfort’s (sp?) True Devotion right now, and plan on making the consecration that it gives. It is a wonderful book on how to grow closer to Jesus through Mary! :gopray:

I highly reccomend it. First time I borrowed it was from my SD, and it has done a lot for my faith life (ended getting my own copy too)!!!

I’ve heard many quote from this book and am ashamed to say that I have yet to read it.:o I am adding it to my list right now…thank you.
 
I’ve been doing my spiritual reading each day and it’s changed my life drastically. Knowing my personality, I force myself to read each day even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Once I skip a day or two, I could easily slip and start wasting time channel flicking (like I used to)!

You’re on the right track… Just don’t fall into trying to read too much all at once…(one of my big faults)… If you set this pace for yourself, you’ll find that it really works…

I too just started True Devotion by De Montfort last night. I’ve been doing the 33 day prepration faithfully though.

Look at me! I do my reading before I come on-line in the morning…not before 9am…SD and I had a nice talk about this…and it works for me…most of the time…:o
