When you think of a friend who has died are you more likely to say “God have mercy on Ben’s soul” or to say “Ben pray for me”

I never think to ask deceased relatives or friends to pray for me. It doesn’t cross my mind the way a saint’s name would.

I pray for my deceased friends and family.
OTOH, I have a brother who was baptized and died as a baby and I pray to him sometimes.

I say prayers for them if they might be in purgatory and know they will return the favor when they are in Heaven.

.
I do ask people I know were holy to pray for me. Unfortunately, none of my friends have been particularly holy.
The original poster however, brings up a very good possibility I have never thought of–if only one or two of my friends who have died were holy. I have prayed for some of them, though.

I have asked my deceased dad to pray for my mom - to keep us before the throne of God’s grace. I have also prayed for his soul.

Is it bad to say it depends on the person? I ask for mercy for my deceased relatives who lived into their 50s or 60s but I ask my good friend who recently died at the age of 7 just after her baptism to pray for me.

I tend to pray for them, however I do have a son in Heaven that I lost to miscarriage who I ask to pray for me 🙂 Otherwise, it’s Saints that I go to the most.

Say the rosary, and all in Heaven will be praying for you.

I especially pray for my friends and relations upon their passing and I attempt to a gain a plenary indulgence for them. I don’t know if I have ever been successful, but I trust in the Blessed Virgin Mary, and I also trust that they will pray for me in return.

I do both (but not as often as I should)

I say something like, “Grandpop- if you can hear me …”

I strictly pray for them. If they’re not in need of any prayers, someone else can benefit from them.

I do pray for people who have died, of course, and I also ask some people who have died to pray for us (my family). For example, one of my daughter’s biological grandfather (we adopted our daughters) died a few years ago. His career was in education and I refer to him as our daughters’ patron saint of education–I ask him to pray for us to lead us when things have come up regarding their education. I also ask my mother, who died 3 years ago, to pray for my daughters when troubles have happened in friendships.

I sometimes ask my grandfather and my mother to pray for me and to help me with things.

Same here. Especially especially my grandmother on my father’s side.

Depends on how close I was to Deceased Friend and if I feel they’re in a position to help me or pray for me. I have asked directly my deceased parents, in-laws and husband to pray for me, also I have asked a deceased former best friend a couple of times, and a deceased stranger I pray for who I had read quite a bit about and felt drawn to ask her for help.

I also do a Holy Souls devotion where you get indulgences for specific Holy Souls and each one you pray for, along with saints you ask to pray with you, goes into a group called your Holy Alliance and you can just ask your Holy Alliance to pray for you. It’s a devotion promoted by Fr. Richard Heilman. Over time your Holy Alliance grows as you add more saints and souls and it’s supposed to become a powerful help to you with so many praying. So while I wouldn’t think to ask most of those deceased people (other than the saints) individually, I can say, “Holy Alliance, please pray for me” and in that way ask a bunch of people at once, as my Holy Alliance is sizable from doing the devotion for many months.

Only every so often, but, yes, I have…

Usually, they are Saints of deceased relatives, but the other night after mass I ran into a friend from a prayer group at our church… as we were talking, we discussed another member of the group who had died, and he mentioned she was buried in the cemetery beside the church… We then went out to see the grave, and it was only fitting to continue our prayers with her, and on a whole new level…

She passed from cancer… but he said he had spoken to her the week before, and she couldn’t have sounded more normal… Such is the peace God brings…

No. But I do ask modern-day martyrs to pray for us, such as those killed for their Christian faith by ISIS in the Middle East, for example. Those who refused to renounce their Christian faith in the face of terrible evil, refusing to convert to Islam and therefor paying the ultimate price for their Christian faith. Saints indeed. Modern-day martyrs, PRAY FOR US.
