Are you pro-gun, or anti-gun?

Oh my. Well, wouldn’t you agree that the even worse category would be “Pro gun and not lawfully permitted to own by civil law”.

In which land do you live, that has so stripped the people of their own power, and forced them to depend on the gubmint. What a tragic breach of the principles of subsidiearity which the Catholic Church asserts. What an overreach of gubmint.

Pro gun people are being oppressed by your gubmint.
Well the gubmint is the people. I live in Australia so not a dictatorship. The pro gun voice is mainly young (and some older) redneck lads of the likes of Oscar Pistorius. Apart from that it is a dead issue and we sigh a collective sigh of relief that sense prevailed here.

I am anti-gun and not a gun owner.

Id like to qualify though, I am not completely anti-gun, I believe Australia’s gun laws are fantastic, as you can still own certain guns like bolt actions, semi automatics and shotguns, you just can’t purchase and keep rediculous weapons like automatic assault rifles and concealable hand guns etc.

Please feel free to challenge my stance on this issue though. 🙂

I WILL CHALLENGE YOU!

[Sorry, I’m a little frustrated]. Three Australians have posted, and the other 2 (not you), have claimed that it is illegal to own any gun in Australia, unless you’re police, obviously. Well, you claim that its legal to own many types of guns: bolt actions, semi-autos, and shotguns.

Well, it can’t be both. Someone is wrong, which is it? :ehh:

Can’t you Australians even tell me what the law is there? UGH :hmmm:

Forgive me, but isn’t Australia a place where almost every living creature there can kill human beings?

I had a friend visit Australia, and he told me that, “Not only can everything here kill you, they WANT to kill you, too.”

It seems rather daft to be unable to own a gun in such a dangerous place. Don’t you think owning guns could help people survive down there?
If you live rurally, you own a gun anyway but only the very best marksmen could ever hit a squiggly snake with a shot. Most snakes are easier to stop with the butt of the gun then a shot. What else? Redback spiders and funnel webs you’d need a machine gun or flame thrower to confidently hit those targets. Then there’s the sharks and stingrays but its hard to get a gun into your swimmers or wetsuit to go for a swim.

So no… guns wouldn’t help us. 🙂

I can assure you that here in the U.S., private citizens are not allowed to own automatic assault rifles (unless one has a “class 3” license issued by the federal government, and those are very rare indeed).

I support Americans (or any adult on the planet) bearing arms equal to those the military has.

Oy, I never claimed that. I said that private guns for self defense are outlawed and all handguns. Guns are legal for sport, rural use and defense professionals like police/military/security.

I won’t poll as in Australia it is illegal to own a gun unless you are police or have a permit because you are an armed guard. Works well. If you get caught with a gun we know you are a criminal, and you get locked up. Of course criminals do use guns but mainly amongst themselves, so if someone is shot you can be pretty certain they have been mixing with the wrong types.
If war ever comes we know where we can get a lot of them very quickly.
Thats a funny thing to say. So down under most people cannot own a gun legally but you know were to get one in case of war. Here in the USA most people can own a gun but military people cannot carry weapons on military bases.🤷

So, on the one hand, it is illegal to own a gun, you say.

On the other hand, EVERYONE who lives in rural areas owns a gun?

I can’t imagine the kind of government which says that you can only have firearms depending on where you live. Who defines rural? What about small towns? What about “micropolises”?

I’m sorry, but to an American reader, Australias take on guns sounds absolutely crazy and confusing.

As to the rest of your post: shotguns. period.

Over here, we sigh a collective sigh of relief that we had our guns when we needed them most—to tell the King of England to mind his own business. To keep anything like that from happening again, we put it in our Bill of Rights. It’s too bad that we’re forgetting the lessons we learned in the past.

The first time you said that, is now. Read your previous posts… you said only police and armed guards can have guns. You said nothing about sport or rural use until this post.

So… just, please apologize for being confusing and we can move on.

Ok, I’m pretty sure its not my error as a reader that has led to this.

I really am undecided on the whole thing.

For starters, I think people do and should have the right to owning a gun. But, I also think that it’s a good idea to not allow the immediate purchase of a gun. Background checks and waiting periods are smart, in my opinion. Then again, that won’t stop a criminal from getting a gun. And, it is a good idea to be able to protect your family from an intruder. But, then again, it’s at least 5 times a year in my city alone that a story comes out of a child being killed in their home from an accidental firing of the gun either by a sibling or the parent or themselves, bless their heart. So you would have to keep your gun locked in a safe place. But then if someone breaks into your house, do you really have time to go to your safe, punch in the code, quietly remove the gun and defend yourself? It seems unlikely to me. But, they’re great and necessary for hunting and I fully support hunting. But does one necessarily need an assault weapon for any real reason? Well, I suppose for militia if the government were to take over and go corrupt. But, they’ll likely wipe out your militia army with drones or biochemical warfare which renders those assault rifles relatively useless.

…In other words, totally undecided.

When I say rural, I mean farm use. Most land owners (I mean farmers) need guns for the day to day. Sometimes an animal will have to be put down or a dingo, wild boar or kangaroo shot. Just normal everyday farm type needs. People in towns even small towns don’t class as rural users.

Yes indeed, well that’s the category I fall in as well.

What do you think your first gun will be? I’m either going to get a .357 Magnum, or a .38 special revolver.
If you can’t decide, go with the .357.

You can fire .38SP in a .357, but not the other way around.
(check the manual, of course).

Pro gun in this poll means pro handguns for private defense. I’m anti gun but as the law in Australia provides, guns are allowed for sport, rural uses and police/military/security use by trained professionals.

I support Americans (or any adult on the planet) bearing arms equal to those the military has.
AMEN!

When the gubmint and the military are more well equipped than the general populace, then they have a “monopoly of violence”… they have the power to establish a dictatorship and a tyranny.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We give the gubmint power, at our own peril.

Thank you Fr. I think I’m leaning towards the .357 for that reason. Then I could always start off with .38 ammo, and switch to .357 once I get a little more comfortable.

We own guns - hand guns and hunting rifles, shotguns… we teach our children to shoot starting at about age 8. They all hunt, including my daughter.

I open carry and have a concealed carry permit.

I also go to mass every day.

The shovel does the job 😃
Most snakes are easier to stop with the butt of the gun then a shot.
Next time try spearing the tip of your shovel at it. 👍
What else? Redback spiders and funnel webs you’d need a machine gun or flame thrower to confidently hit those targets.
lol. although im sure the shotgun would work 👍 (Unless your in the city, than I suggest some bug spray). 😃
Then there’s the sharks and stingrays but its hard to get a gun into your swimmers or wetsuit to go for a swim.

haha.

FIne, I missed that post.

However, your post #12 does something which I explicitly warned against in the OP: do not define what “pro gun” or “anti gun” are.

You can define “pro gun” all you want, as “pro handguns for private defense”

However, you are incorrect to say that that is what “pro gun” means IN THIS POLL. This is my poll, and I say that those terms have no definition in this poll.

You can’t just apply a definition to the poll, to influence how people vote on it… Its my poll, and in this poll, the terms are undefined. I thought that was made clear in the OP.
