I saw a great quote in Time magazine (don’t hold it against me), that said that Pope Benedict is “Profoundly Catholic” and that he does not live in the world, but lives in the Church. Do you consider yourself like Pope Benedict?

I would hope to be that way… and I’ll continue to work at that… I believe I have much to learn and much room to grow… I’m certainly not where I was at 5-7 years ago. But I’m sad to say, that I need to grow much more…

Doing my best to be Profoundly Catholic. I have heard some people express unhappiness with the election of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. I could not be happier. When he stepped out onto that balcony I instantly fell in love with him - he instantly became my “spiritual father”. I have asked others if this happened to them and have received only yes answers. The sadness I felt over JPII melted away in an instant - which I think he would have wanted. Anybody else?

I saw a magazine cover (Time) in the grocery store today on my way home from work. It had a photo of JPII on it. I felt like I was going to cry. Maybe that is part of the reason I am so full of joy over Benedict: because God knew what a sacrifice it was for me to be obedient and give up JPII this time.

As for being profoundly Catholic: the world hurts me, bores me, rubs me the wrong way. Sheesh if I could figure out a way of staying in the Church, I would do it.

The more I become like Benedict XVI and the less I become like the knuckleheads who run Time magazine the better I will be.

I read a really good editorial on this the other day, and the writer suggested that some major headlines should have basically said, “Cardinals elect Catholic, World in Shock.” Really, what was the secular media expecting? Did they honestly believe that the cardinals appointed by Pope John Paul II were going to elect someone who was going to dismantle every bit of Divine Revelation interpreted by the Church?

According to my pastor, I am, and he says that everyone knows it! 😃

Christ is risen…truly He is risen!

I would like to…at least I hope I am like him…If I can model my life after him, I think God will look down upon me favorably.

Through God’s Grace, I am working on being “Profoundly Catholic”, but I realize that I will only achieve that should I persevere in God’s Mercy and Jutice and my soul rest in Heaven. :gopray: Thanks and God Bless.

I felt exactly the same way my friend. I felt genuinely heartbroken when our wise holy Father passed away and I thought “how can we replace a man who was a real father to us?” then Pope Benedict appeared and I felt that I and the Church were in safe hands. God bless the Pope and may he have long life to do his work in the vineyard. As for being profoundly catholic I am a sinner with little will power but I do accept the Church so is a sense yes I am.

No, I am not. I believe and hold dearly to everything the Church teaches; however, my actions many times say otherwise. The temptations the accompany a 20 year are to great sometimes. Hopefully through grace, prayer, and my own will, ill be able to overcome many obstacles and be able to call myself a “profound Catholic.”

i like to think i am!

whether i truly am profoundly Catholic is another question:o

One small comment in response to one of the messages here - I never felt anything but total joy for JP II. Because I know he is sitting right next to Jesus and is infinitely happy right now.

For the past few weeks, when I pray, one thing I say a lot to Jesus is “Are you enjoying being with JP II, I know He is enjoying being with you!”

I think I understand your point (and please don’t take this the wrong way), but God made this world for us to enjoy and take delight in. Try to find the good in all that God made. Even in others who rub us the wrong way (I’m really trying to convince myself here).

Holy people seem to be able to take all the lemons they encounter and make a huge pitcher of lemonade. Look at the Holy Father himself. He thought he would be able to live out the rest of his days in relative peace and quiet. Now he has the world telling him what to do in a job he never asked for.

I feel exactly the same way. JPII was very much a father figure to me, and his death affected me greatly. The strange thing is that, initially, Cardinal Ratzinger was the potential successor about whom I had the most reservations. Much of that changed, after I did a lot of reading about him, but not all of it. But when he came out on that balcony, I immediately had the biggest smile on my face, and a tremendous sense of peace, and thought “He will make a wonderful ‘Papa’ in every sense of the word.” I had not anticipated that reaction, at all. That was a gift from God, I think.

Am I a profound Catholic? By no means. But I am trying, and getting a little closer.

I am doing my best to live by the law of the Church. I must admit however, that Pope Benedict XVI is probably holier than myself:)

Yeah…which surprised me as well. I was thrilled when he was announced as Pope, and if I hadn’t been sitting at home alone in front of the TV shoving stir-fry into my mouth (I was already late to work thanks to the distracting announcement of “Habemus Papam” on my way home from the grocery store and had to eat lunch in about 5 min.) I would have been cheering. Odd reaction for someone who, a few years ago, used to refer to him as “Ratzy the Inquisitor”. Now I can’t imagine anyone better to lead the Church here on earth.

I think I’ve come a long way in the past couple of years, thanks be to God. “Profoundly Catholic” and like Papa Bene? I’m trying. Don’t think I’m there yet, but I want to be.

wow - what a great thread! i’m very happy to see all of the people here who WISH to be profoundly catholic - and are either there, or are on their way!

just the DESIRE to be profoundly catholic, i think, pleases our Father’s heart.

and i feel that way about benedict XVI, too. we used to call him ‘more catholic than the pope’. now we can’t say that.

so we say ‘preCISEly as catholic as the pope.’ 😉
