Are You Proud or Humble?

I know in the past, I let pride get the best of me and I was not a good person for it. I was introduced to humility about 6 years ago and I have been working on getting better at it every day. I constantly have to remind myself that I come third, and that in order to be humble I don’t need to think less of myself, but to this of myself less. Sometimes it is a struggle.

God bless and great topic.

Pride is a huge problem for me. Nearly every sin I confess is rooted in pride. I will try this. Thank you.

I note that during Eucharistic adoration, most of the Hispanic attendees will routinely prostrate themselves, either like in your picture, or totally flat on the ground. It is very profound to view that reverence to the Real Presence.

This reminds me of some of the scenes in the “Nun’s Story.” Everything seemed to have been seen as “pride.” So what was a possible solution? Intentionally fail your next exam that determines whether you get the job assignment or not. That will fix the pride. NOT.

Other than that, anyone who pretends to be humble may indeed show pride in exhibiting it. So it’s not something I worry about.

Agreed. However, it is often possible to distinguish the Pharacee approach to false humility from those genuinely showing reverence. Often the face gives it away.

ARE YOU PROUD OR HUMBLE?

Prostrating yourself before God is a wonderful way of adoring Him and showing Him you understand and accept a proper relationship with Him - you accepting His love for you and you loving Him in return and accepting that you have been created for His glory. Doing so every day will help keep pride from destroying your relationship with Him.

If I do this, I won’t be getting up any time soon. 😊

I was listening to a Lighthouse Catholic Media talk one time and it said if you end up concerned that your genuine piety may draw attention and praise and cause you to feel the sin of pride, to ask our Lady to hide your piety from others. The priest giving the talk said that you can tell it worked when no one comments or thanks you for what you did. I frequently ask our Lady to hide me from the view of others so that I can focus only on my prayers to our Lord.

yes I will recommend your struggle with pride to the Virgin Mary - the humblest of all creatures. It’s something all of us who know ourselves fairly well and are honest with ourselves have a problem with - just focus on making progress - ask God to send you situations in your life that will give you practice.

Maybe I’m just really, really prideful, but I think literally prostrating myself would make matters worse.
It’s possible to be in the position where you are sinfully proud of acting humble. Trust me. 😊

I don’t deal with humility; Death will humble me forever soon enough!

For me, pridefully is often demonstrated commonly with the inability to admit we are wrong or accept correction. It’s also with the inability to apologize when wrong. Lastly, it’s the inability to say, “I don’t know” when we don’t.

I don’t know if it’s so much prostrating ourselves and hunching over.

Humility, to me, is just the opposite, not getting feelings hurt easily, admitting when we’re wrong, accepting correction, apologizing when indicated, saying, “I don’t know” when we don’t know.

Pridefulness can be believing we are superior to others when we are equals. It’s really a kind of selfishness.

Although, I differentiate good pride and bad pride. Good pride is if we are proud of ourselves, our accomplishments, our family, neighborhood, country, etc. I think that bad pride is arrogance, believing in our own superiority. It is good pride taken to excess.
