wordonfire.org/ This is Fr.Robert Barron’s website too. You can listen to his homilies as well. He has a regular feature on relevantradio.com too if you want to pick it as well. The best part of this initial post is that so many have responded to her article. Guess I will be getting ready for mass right now.

Distracted,

People who claim to be Christian, who have heard Christ’s full message, yet, who do not live Christ’s complete message, are not pulling any wool of God’s eyes.

.
true enough… I just get tired of always having to add something to that word… You can’t just say So and so is a Catholic… because, again, that doesn’t tell anyone anything…

people’s whose parents are catholic but who have never gone to Mass claim to be Catholic…

people who believe in abortion claim to be Catholic…

people who disregard what th Church teaches on other subjects… ditto…

none of them is Catholic in my book…

Catholic means you adhre to the teachings of the Church… Period.

True, if a person just doesn’t know better… about certain “lesser” things the Church teaches… that’s understandable… & maybe i’d be willing to call that person Catholic… l

but you don’t have to be a catechized, card-carrying, every-day-Mass-attending Catholic to know that murdering the unborn is wrong…

I

“***The more a correct conscience prevails, the more do persons and groups turn aside from blind choice and try to be guided by objective standards of moral conduct.” Over time, the Church Christ instituted has proven to be correct on matter after matter. It now has great authority over me, by virtue of having proven more correct than myself in the past so often. ***

But I digress; my point is that these people are still worthy of calling themselves Catholics, even if they are not well catechized.
i just made this kind of point in a post few minutes ago… I’ve had time to re- think what i said… What made me re-think about it was remembering that i was not always catechized and at one point was downright “lost”… but was still Catholic… . but no matter what i ever went through or whatever… i never believed in abortion (esp once i saw an aborted baby :(), never believed in contraception or divorce-remarriage, etc…(maybe that’s the power of baptism???
I think passage 1791 needs to be taught more forcefully - that people are responsible and culpable for the fruits of their lazy ignorance. That is truly the root of many problems in the church today, IMO.
i totally agree… when i wasn’t sure what was right, i went to Right to Life… and got info on abortion (for example)…

what disturbs me is when people suspect that something the Church says is true (and/or the whole Church can be trusted, that it is or could be the Original Church), they still persist in their own ways… which (in this one case i know of) is disastrous… (it always is) but the person doesnt seem to care… THAT is totally weird to me… makes me wonder about how … well, it seems that many people - in so doing - "sear " their consciences… throw their souls away… or whatever you call it…

Only God can know how good or not we are.Only God can know how Catholic we are /or not.
To profess ourselves to be “a good catholic” is to commit the sin of pride. We are all desciples of Christ. At the end of Mass Father always says “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord”(or similar).
It is not for us to judge others as good/bad catholics.
For example i have noticed some people sit at the back of church for Sunday Mass and don’t utter a single word of response. Some could say “they are not doing it right” or similar but my view is at least they came and attended Mass.
We should be noticed by others in our daily lives by our actions as Christians & Catholics. We should be modest about ourselves and always be ready to help others.By our example we lead people to Christ.
In private we pray ,read ,silent thought and meditation on Our Blessed Lord.
Love all people on earth no matter what religion or not as we have been commanded.
Our worthiness is not for us to discern but for God alone
God Bless

This is a question that all Catholics need to ask themsevles. When it comes to politics, there is no party and almost no politician that mets all the requirements.
A real Catholic must respect life. As Pope Benidict reminded us from natural conception to natural death.
This means a good Catholic is not to practice birth control, 80% do and have no moral problems with it, be pro-life, but it goes further. Between birth and death in the respect for human life, including fighting poverty, standing against war, supporting the rights of individuals and of workers including imagrants, propermedical care for all, good housing, clean food, proper education, freedom of religion. They need to be for a just judicial system and be against the death penalty. Don’t forget respect and care for the elderly. Emdrotic stem cell reaserch is out, cloniong is out, artificial insimination is out. Weekly mass attendance is in, recieving the sacraments is in, ecumenicalism is in.
I’m certain I’ve left a number of things out.
My point is that the issues that Catholics need to consider go far beyond just abortion. That doesn’t mean that abortion is a major issue, but a good Catholic, having properly developed thier conscience on all issues, could support a pro abortion canidate, if that is not the reason they are voting for them. WRONG this comes out of the Document by the USCCB on Faithful Citizenship. WRONG. You may have THOUGHT you could interpret what they said that way, BUT this is NOT what Pope Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and several very strong Bishops, (as opposed to the majority of weak nellies) said.To be really catholic, at least politically, one cannot just be single issue. this seems to be what to many are trying to do. Abortion is not ONE issue. It is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE which lays the foundation for all other LIFE ISSUES. If one does not have A WELL FORMED CONSCIENCE, if one ignores the teachings of the Church and is not willing to accept them, if in refusing to accept the direction of the Church that in destroying an unborn child one is cooperating in undermining ALL life issues, then one is completely lacking the understanding of what the Church has said about the issue of abortion. The issue of abortion is intertwined and connected to the issues of euthanasia (see Washington State as an example) homosexual marriage, cloning, embryonic stem cell research. (not only the destruction of unborn children, but also the audacity to create it.)Peace,
FAB
:banghead:I am so tired of hearing the words “one issue” “one Issue” voting when that one issue, the issue of life underlies all other issues and is the very first one we should consider. Without life, we have nothing. We should protect this right for all and as loudly and strongly as we can. As Pope John Paul II said in one of his documents, (paraphrased) All issues of “quality” of life such as housing, food, employment are as nothing compared to life itself. You can read any document by the Popes, the Bishops (if you can translate what the USCCB has to say) and you will see these documents always begin with a sentence regarding the preciousness and dignity of LIFE.

We are living in a pro death society because that is what society is supporting. Again I will mention Euthanasia (assisted suicide) , abortion, cloning, embryonic stem cell research, homosexual marriage, because apparently I haven’t said it enough. Everything the law and human nature has been held to be sacred and according to nature since laws were made is being stripped of protection. Protective laws are disappearing. (The Ten Commandments) (Hamurabi) LIFE ISSUES are no long PROTECTED by law. Society has begun with the most defenseless, the unborn, embryo used for research, but soon it will be the disabled (Terry Sheivo a test case), then the elderly.

Would you call this society healthy? I would call it one tainted by the scent of human arrogance. The scent gets stronger every day, each time bo takes another protection of society away and it all began with abortion rights in 1973 and it is continuing, so far, with bo trying to repeal the right of conscience protections for medical personnel. This is after he said those opposing abortion have to pay for world wide abortions. The Mexico City policy?

Wake up.

Wake up, for the love of God and your neighbor.
