Hello, I’m trying to work up my apologetics after being shut down by a protestant guy who was walking around trying to take down Catholics at a pilgrimage site (Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Mission, B.C.). Well, I decided to go on a protestant apologetics site to see what they’d probably ask if I ever encounter one again and I’m stumped at how to refute them.🤷 Here is the site:

I’m mainly concerned on the first question. There’s also more where that came from, but I would like to learn bit by bit.

I did search “Are you saved.” on Catholic.com. but it was for refuting a person with a different bible passage in mind.

If you are asked this question, the proper response is “I am saved, I am being saved, and I hope for salvation”

Then launch into a refutation of the OSAS heresy. You can back this all up scripturally here: scripturecatholic.com/salvation.html

(do look up these verses and make sure they’re easily understood… I threw a really nuanced approach to a verse at a guy I was talking to one time and he didn’t get the connection, which took away from the other verses I used)

As to the rest of the questions on that site, most of them are geared towards a form of baptists who believe water baptism is necessary but once you get it you are saved forever (OSAS), so most of the other questions don’t apply to us.
 
Say, “I’m working my salvation out with fear and trembling.” - philippians 2:12.
 
I just tell these people “Are you doing what Jesus tells you to do?”

If they say I believe in Him as my Lord and Savior, and I’ve accepted Him into my heart, ask him, “Is that all you get out of your Bible studies?”

God knows whether you are saved. Just listen to Mary’s advice and “Do whatever He tells you.”

No one is safe until they are in Heaven. Unless Jesus tell you Himself that you are saved, then you honestly don’t know. So if someone asks you if you are saved, tell Him, “He hasn’t told me yet.” Then ask the guy if He knows Jesus’ phone number so you can call and ask Him.

Keep it simple,

Paul said that [we should work out our salvation in fear and trembling]. Give your protestant friend that reference and see if he starts to “interpret” what Paul said or if he says that Paul contradicts himself and consequently if the Bible cotradicts itself.

So: Are we arrogant to say that “we are saved” or are we humble to “work out our salvation in fear and trembling”.

I am saved is arrogance and presumption. Lord have mercy on me - a sinner…that is humilty.

This is a good article. They guy ran into the same thing as the OP. Buncha baptists asked him if he was saved, and he argued that the guy’s notion of salvation was flawed, that he really didn’t understand what “Being saved” in the bible meant.

Here are additional bible verses that are easy to remember:

Matt 7:21 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Having faith (saying Lord Lord) is not enough…doing the will of the Father is still needed (works).

Rom 11:

22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.

Ask him what does being cut off mean?

Heb 10;

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
 
As a Baptist, the term “saved” has not always been a favorite of mine. I try to use the term “believe”. One can claim they are “saved” but have no clear understanding of the gospel and not really believe. With the same token, one can do all the good works of his/her church and try his/her best, but not believe. If that individual is attempting to earn God’s approval, it is evident they do not believe.

Someone mentioned the verse in Philippians where Paul commanded us to “work out our salvation with fear and trembling.” If you keep reading, you will see “it is God who works in us…”. So salvation is not a matter of us doing, but God. For salvation is of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 gives us the Gospel according to Paul. If there is anything added to it, it’s wrong.
Now I would remind you, brothers,1 of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

The question is do we trust Jesus Christ today? Is He and His work on the cross sufficient for salvation? Or do we stand at the foot of the cross and shake our heads to tell God “Your sacrifice isn’t enough. I must add to it.”

The website you provided is just weird. I don’t understand why it was even put up because it is badly written, does not provide accurate information. I suggest that you ignore the site whose writers have a good reputation. A few good authors, Lee Strobel, and Peter Kreft are good beginners.

I agree with the above statement to a certain point because in the end no one is ever totally certain because it is God who saves us from our sins and not man. That said, when someone asks you if you have been saved, they are basically asking you if God is your God, the Christian God, the one of abraham and Isaac? They are asking if Jesus is your personal saviour, if he is your christ. As Catholics it becomes easy to take both granted and by saying that they are, you are reaffirming what you believe. In other words Jesus becomes your saviour and not the easter bunny. When in doubt, there are many prayers that in essence all mean same thing which invite God and Jesus to be part of one’s heart forever. For example:

A long version

Dear Heavenly Father, You have called me to Yourself in the name of Your dear Son Jesus (Yeshua). I realize that Jesus is the only Way, the Truth, and the Life; and is the only Mediator between You and man.

I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner. I believe that Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross, died for my sins, and rose again on the third day. I am truly sorry for the deeds which I have committed against
You, and therefore, I am willing to repent (turn away from my sins). Have mercy on me, a sinner. Cleanse me, and forgive me of my sins as I forgive anyone who has ever sinned against me.

I believe this type of prayer when prayed wholeheartedly can be life changing and has a place inside the Catholic denomination. It certainly affected my life in a positive way. They can help dedicate one’s life to God, and renew one’s connection to God over time. It’s a prayer that you can say as many times as the spirit leads.

Conversely, someone can “believe” but not be saved ! Having faith is part of salvation, but by itself, it is incomplete. Many claim to believe Jesus and yet ignore His instructions !
 
The Catholic Catechism speaks to this…born again, a one-time, highly emotional salvational moment. After which you can behave however you want, because you have been saved! This was hugely popular in the late 70s and throughout most of the 80s, probably as a backlash to disco and the cocaine epidemic.

The US Catholic Catechism (sorry I don’t have a page number) assures us that we are “born again,” but by virtue of the Sacraments, not by some one time moment of emotional abandon. In order to stay “born again,” we have to keep up with the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation. I think being a Catholic is a lot more work than being a “born again” Protestant. But nobody, including Jesus, ever said it would be easy!🙂
 
I want the 60 seconds back that I just spent quickly skimming that “website.” First, it seems to have been written by well-meaning teenagers- there are numerous grammatical and syntactical errors. Second, all those capitalizations- that screams hyperbole. Let’s compare this with Fides et Ratio, Verbum Domini, Lumen Gentium, or any one of the numerous brilliant encyclicals written by Paul VI, Blessed John Paul II, or Benedict XVI. There are also many scholarly works by Protestant theologians.

I’m sure the author of the web page is well meaning in terms of his or her Christianity. But how can one be expected to read it???

Do you honestly know anyone that adds to the sacrifice? I have never heard of such a thing. Tell me and explain to me who they are and what they are adding. I am not sure I could explain this. Tell me so I can explain this to others.👍
