Are you smarter than a 9 y/o?

My almost 9 y/o grand daughter spent the weekend with us. We went to the store and got some things at the bulk foods aisle. We couldn’t get the scale to print the label right. We were spending $ 80.53 for a handfull of those candy pumpkins. In a matter of seconds Chloe’ put in a few numbers and presto, 74cents! With a deadpan look, she said “you forgot the zero”.

Talk about feeling stupid…😊

So, are YOU smarter than a 9 y/o??

My children humble me all the time. I figured that was part of God’s plan. There are a whole lot of areas that I still come out on top, when there isn’t, I thank them for being so helpful. They are so proud of themselves that they could provide help and in the end we are both pleased. I wouldn’t take it so hard.
 
Have you ever noticed that all credit card swiping machines are different?

This past summer I was in the grocery store with my 4 year old grandson… I kept swiping the card wrong… He says* “Gramps, turn the card around… Swipe it again. Then wait… Press credit… Wait again… Then sign the pad with the magic pen” *All the ladies in the check out line were impressed, but then they were over 50 and knew you had to be under 10 to work the system.
 
I’m not 9 but I sometimes watch in amazement when my mum can’t figure out something that to me is very obvious, and I’m talking in terms of technology. It got me thinking though, when I’m 50/60 would I have difficulty with the technology that’s released then?

I think why younger kids can solve many things that some adults can’t is because the observe. Obviously to a 4 year old kid a credit card swiping machine is more fascinating, so they observe when people use it. We lose that fascination over time and therefore can’t remember some basics.

I was about 6 when I first used a computer, it was an old MS-DOS command line system, it was 1994 then, I didn’t know any commands, but I spent hours just typing things into it. When we got our first computer when I was 9, I spent months fiddling around with the computer.
 
I am lucky I can add 2 + 2 without a calculator.

I think God is using my talents elsewhere through my love of literature and volunteering.

He sure as heck didn’t give me any math skills.:o
 
Hahaha… The first time I knew I was in trouble was when my 3 yr old outsmarted me!

In the process of moving, my husband and I got separated on the road and this was pre cell phone days. Anyway, I ended up going to a military base to ask for help from the Aid Society so I could get a hotel room for the night and continue to look for him. This involved standing in long lines, going from office to office with kids in tow and basically jumping through a lot of time consuming hoops. So to get my kids to behave, I promised that I would give them candy as soon as we got through the line and I took them somewhere for lunch. So, the last line we had to stand in, this one receptionist felt sorry for me and asked if she could give the kids each a box of individual cereal. I thanked her and let each kid pick a box of cereal to munch on. As they were getting done, my middle child, then 3 yo, asked, “Mommy was this lunch?” I should have known he was up to something, but I was thinking what good fortune that I wouldn’t have to take them somewhere for lunch so I could get out and look for my husband… so I said Yes! Immediately I knew I was taken by the look in his eye… so he responded, “I’m done, can I have candy now?”

Yeah… the moment you realize that a 3 yo can outsmart you is humiliating… and scary. I often wondered how he would outsmart me in his teen years. Now he is 19 yo and let me tell you… I may have gotten smarter, but so did he!

My 16 year old “honors” daughter was playing a 6th grade educational computer game with her 5th grade brother. Clearly she had the advantage … or did she? I hear them laughing the all of a sudden she yells out, “Dad, Richard’s cheating … he’s answering the questions before I can read them.”

“So,” I replied. “You are not smarter than a 5th grader.”

I can use AV equipment, VCR, DVD player, speakers, projector etc. with any CCD class, but not with a parent class, esp. not with an adult ed class, as most attendees will be to hold to tell me how to hook things up and get started, but any 3rd grader can run the system. but I think it is because they cheat, they can read the small print on the controls
 
I am a computer software engineer. I used to be a network engineer. I have learned and forgotten more than two dozen programming languages. I studied physics and astronomy and computers in college. I built my first computer from a kit when I was in high school around 1977 I think. I am the one people ask to set their digital watch or fix the time on their VCR.

I still cannot figure out how to use a fax machine and refuse to get an electric can opener. I find bank statements impenetrably confusing.
