Are you the sole Catholic in family?

My wife, two sons and I are the only Catholics in our family. My side is Baptist/Anglican and her side is Baptist/Methodist/Episcopalian. We really have no issue with the Anglicans and Episcopalians in our family, but the Baptist and Methodist seem to always have sly remarks for certain things. Does anyone else (Catholic) deal with these issues as well?
 
I am the only Catholic in my family. Five generations on both my Dad’s and Mom’s side are Mormon. My Mom passed away two weeks ago and I was there for the funeral. Being the only Catholic was very difficult. The sly remarks were out in full force.

With the exception of two of my husband’s aunts (one in her mid-80s and another in her mid-60s) we are it when it comes to practicing Catholics in the entire family…both sides.

I have virtually no one that I’m aware of that is a practicing Catholic. That doesn’t discount the loads of fallen away Catholics in our family.

I almost positive everyone in our direct families…parents, siblings, grandparents and in-laws…are all baptized Catholics (except my dad who is baptized methodist). No one practices anymore.

My MIL attends a non-denominational. Everyone else identifies themselves as agnostic.

It’s really frustrating.

Wow that has to be tough with the agnostic part. We do, however, have a powerful tool in the Holy Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy! We can pray for them and offer up our sufferings on their behalf!
 
I am the sole Catholic in my immediate family. My father (and his family) is Southern Baptist and he converted my mother when they were married. I was raised to believe that the Pope is the Anti-Christ, all priests are inherently bad/evil men, and the Catholic Church is a corrupt perversion of Christianity.

I am 24 now and converted when I was 18. It is now, and has always been, a wedge between me and my family. When I originally told my parents I was converting, I was kicked out of the house for 3 days before they allowed me to return. My father still doesn’t acknowledge my faith and simply considers me a “wayward” baptist.

It’s no fun… but that’s my cross to bear :-/

I am so very sorry. Bear the cross proudly and love your parents even more. Many do not know anything about the Church besides what they were told by a pastor that was passed down to that from another. :hug1:

Most of my relatives are (nominally, at least) SDA or CoE. Religion has never, ever been a problem.
 
All of you and your families are in my prayers. My parents were both very devout, but out of all 6 kids I am the only Catholic left. My husband and I have received many comments from my siblings, especially regarding our 8 kids and openness to more if God sees fit. It’s a mixed blessing living far from them all. I love them and miss them but I’m relieved not to have to listen to the comments regularly. And so glad my kids don’t need to either. It’s bad enough hearing strangers bad talk the faith. My husband’s family is mostly Catholic, but they live in Mexico so visits to them only happen every few years.

We live so far from our family as well. Our eldest son (5) will be starting school this fall. We are putting him in the Catholic School System here. My SIL said you are putting him in a “Cathooolic school?” If it were a Protestant private school, a word would’ve never been said about it. 🤷
 
In my extended family, there are two practicing Catholics (me and a distant relative) and two “fallen-away” Catholics. My mother the Baptist doesn’t have a kind word for the Church and keeps warning me that a lot of people really hate Catholics. Everyone else is agnostic and doesn’t really care. Let’s just say I don’t get a lot of support.

You do though. You have the support of Christ and the Church he established on earth!
 
I have the opposite problem. The only protestant in a Catholic family. The rude comments, the exclusions, the total disregard for certain things is almost overwhelming at times.

When I was a Catholic, I was the only one in my immediate family. I had a step-great-grandmother who was Catholic but I never knew her.

I did have a relative who did make a few snide remarks, but this person came around and went to the Easter Vigil when I joined the Church.
 
My wife, my two sons and I are the only Catholics in the family. My mother’s family are all Presbyterian, while my father’s side are mainly Baptist. By and large, all have accepted it without any criticism or rude comments.

I converted in my 20s.

They are generally fairly good-natured about my Catholicism though they obviously disagree with it. I have some Catholics in my extended family, but they all seem to be of the “liberal” dissenting type and are in some cases less respectful to the Catholic Church than the non-Catholics.

Ever hear from family, “you can be Catholic but do not expect me to like or agree with it” lol
 
My husband and I are the sole practicing catholics in my family. His family, I believe are agnostics…new age, or something like that…we don’t discuss religion with his family at all! However, we share it with my family all the time…especially with our children and grandchildren…
