Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76 has been elected the 266th pope and taken the name Francis, reports the Catholic News Service. The election last night in Rome - at 5.05am this morning, Australian Eastern Daylight Time - came on the first full day of the conclave on the conclave’s fifth ballot. I have been learning as much as I can about our new Pope Francis and something I haven’t
been able to find is which St. Francis. De Salle, of Assisi?
Just curious, because my father was named after St. Francis of Assisi.
I thank God that He has given us a new Pope, apparently a very holy man.

Or it could be St Francis Xavier, the co-founder of the Society of Jesus, of which Pope Francis belongs too.

But my bet is on St Francis of Assisi.

This evening on EWTN there was a discussion of how remarkable it was that a Jesuit would choose the name Francis, referring openly to Francis of Assisi. Fr. Mitch and two of the Friars had nice things to say about Jesuit and Franciscan virtues.

And the news media also made reference to Pope Francis having a message to bring to the dominant wealthy nations of the world on behalf of the vast majority of the world’s population, who live in poverty.

This is an extraordinary and historic development indeed. A simple man, who as Archbishop and Cardinal took the bus to work rather than a limo, and who lived in a modest apartment in Buenos Aires and cooked his own meals instead of living a catered life in a mansion…

Now that is precisely the kind of humility and simplicity this world needs. And the choice of the Cardinal electors - a Jesuit (the first in history) means that the central issue of evangelization is Jesus - not power struggles within the Curia, not periferal issues of advanced cultures. No, it is the simple message that the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the center of our faith, and should be the center of our lives.

I believe Pope Francis will be greatly beloved throughout the world. His opening remarks were genuine, and profound. How heart rending were his simple words in casual Italian - Buona Sera. And he referred to the crowd as ‘Brothers and Sisters.’ We’re going to love this man dearly. And he is humble and kind/carismatic at the same time. He will be a wonderful Pope.
