Argentine pastoral letter: 'Accompaniment' in marriage must be faithful

San Luis, Argentina, Aug 30, 2017 / 02:10 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A pastoral letter on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia by Bishop Pedro Daniel Martinez Perea of San Luis, Argentina is being welcomed as “great news” for its clarity and directness.

Bishop Martinez’s letter, issued on June 29 and sent to the priests of his diocese, is titled “Marriage, new unions, and the Eucharist in chapter 8 of Amoris laetitia.” It addressed confusion generated by some readings of the document and emphasized the importance of “helping married couples to follow God’s plans in their lives.”

“The text is very straightforward,” reflected Dr. Kurt Martens, a professor of canon law at The Catholic University of America. “It’s a very well done pastoral letter with a lot of teaching opportunity; he does use Pope Francis to emphasize the teaching of the Church. I think it’s great news.”

This very good news but one must wonder what happens when Bishop Perea’s pastoral letter is at odds with what the bishops of Buenos Aires, Malta, Germany and Belgium?

“There is nothing in there in the sense of what you see in the Malta guidelines, or in what the bishops of the Buenos Aires province have said … I think it’s pretty significant that also from Argentina we’re hearing this voice.”

Didn’t Pope Francis say that the bishops of Buenos Aires had “the correct interpretation?” Where do we go from here?

Yeah. I simply do not understand how Pope Francis can allow such contradictory opinions on the subject without even attempting to clarify things.

It’s nothing new… diocese against diocese. We are seeing great variance. My own archdiocese maintains the traditional discipline (must live as brother and sister to receive). Follow your bishop I suppose… it doesn’t appear that +Francis has bound the Church to his preference.

Well, he said (the Spanish equivalent of) “there are no other interpretations.” It is obviously not literally true … so maybe he did mean that it was “the correct interpretation.” Maybe not.

Perhaps its the translation but one sentence is face value at odds with JP2 and contradicts his other text.

“If they continue to live together they “would be in an objective state of sin,” he said. This makes the reception of Communion impossible.”

If this were true the next sentence would be false.
