What do you all think of doing away with the whole idea of godparents? To me, it seems to be rather a bad joke.
Why not return to the original practice of having “witnesses” and perhaps require that the witness (or witnesses) be members of the parish where the child is to be baptized? If we make it a church law, then we are off the hook and don’t need to explain to family members why we are not choosing them. Just my thought. It works well, when choosing best man and maid of honor at a wedding.
