I agree, illegal abortions are extremely dangerous for both the mother and the child. That doesn’t answer my question. It’s a simple yes or no.

By your persistence, it is clear you are asking a bit of a loaded question. I know that you want me to say that babies take precedence, the reality is that neither do. I’m sorry, but you are not going to back me into the corner of saying that babies lives saved are all that matters in this situation. The situation remains far more complex as I have communicated in this thread.

To the OP,

Are there any particular arguments you need help refuting? And for personal experience, here’s what I’ll say.
  1. Reading up on various arguments is useful. Of the two times (at least that I recall) I’ve had these discussions, the first time went a bit poorly because the people I was discussing with brought up arguments that gave me a mental “WHAT?” They threw me off not because they were solid, but because I could not articulate why they were fallacious. (Much in the way that if someone claimed the sky was actually purple with pink polka dots as opposed to blue. You’d know they were wrong, buy probably not know where to start with the refutation)
  2. Like others have said, be civil. The second time I had the discussion was with a friend from a class. Be calm with your arguments and kind in your demeanor. And make sure your rhetoric isn’t aggressive.

Read, listen (on CA Live podcasts) and watch every you-tube debate that Trent Horn has done.

In my opinion, he is the most effective one out there today.

Also, be familiar with Feminists For Life

Are there others at your school who agree with you? You could form a group for pro-life causes?

If you want to be an activist and convince others of your viewpoints, I can offer a suggestion and what I know from being an older person. Arguing changes very few, if any, minds (particularly on this topic). Take the energy you have from being angry and work in ministry to pregnant women who need support. Then work in ministry to young families, who need support. You show people you are pro-life through activism of providing all different kinds of support to those who need it, and who may otherwise choose abortion. I know a lot of people who spend a lot of energy being “activists”. They scream at women who are on their way into have an abortion. They are dramatic. They carry on. But they make no impact, because nobody wants to be yelled at or argued with. My advice is to take that energy and provide real support…the kind that may change someone’s mind so they don’t feel an abortion is necessary. I think, truthfully, it is the most beautiful kind of activism there is.

tossing in my two cents: if you’re talking to atheists or the simply non-religious about the pro-life position, DON’T BRING UP RELIGION. your religious reasons mean literally nothing to anyone who isn’t also a member of your faith. this is a stumbling block i see many people trip over. if you want to convince people, you need to come at it from their angle and address their concerns, not the things you might find convincing.

The absolute, basement, fundamental argument of the pro abortion people is that one human being has the right to determine that another human being will live or die. It is this idea that has been at the core of everything bloodthirsty tyrant throughout history. From Genghis Khan to Adolph Hitler, Josef Stalin and Mao. It is that idea that pro life is against.
All the advice about staying away from religious arguments and positions is very good. People who have no belief in the sanctity of life as given to us by God isn’t going to mean a tinkers da*& to that crowd. Good luck to you. I’ve been in your position and it is the looks like “what kind of dinosaur are you?” that sometimes are the most hurtful, especially from friends who don’t agree on the topic.
