I’ll use the same format then!.

1. Both The Roman Catholic Church and Islam believe that only they are the one true church/religion.
You are correct, every valid church should believe that they are the one true church and have the fullness of truth. They should also believe in some sort of magisterial authority in which when one hears the church, they hear God. If a church does not make that assertion, it is not in keeping with the words of Christ.

2. The Roman Catholic Church and the Islam require mandatory fasting.
So did the jews, by God’s decree. What’s the point?

3. The Roman Catholic Church worships, prays to and gives titles of God to Mary. Islam highly esteems Mary and she is mentioned 34 times in the Qu’ran.
Worshipping Mary is blasphemy and mortal sin. No catholic has ever been encouraged to do this. No title of God is ever given to Mary. There is no restriction anywhere in the bible against praying to anyone, alive on earth or in heaven.

4. The Roman Catholic Church and Islam base their salvation on a complicated system of works and deny salvation by faith alone. There is no assurance of salvation in either religion.
The church teaches that salvation is by grace alone, acting through a faith that is made living by works which were ordained by Christ, as according to Eph 2:8-10… we do not teach saved by works. Even so, I must point out that the jews likewise had a covenant which involved cooperative action by the people… a covenant which was ordained by God and promoted by Christ (who said “not one jott or tittle of the law will pass away”)

5. Both cults deny the Biblical view of the Atonement. The Roman Catholic Church doctrine dictates that one must go to Purgatory to have his sins purged, Jesus just paved the way. The Muslims believe their works will save them but will not know until Judgment Day. This is because there is no atonement for sin, and God’s grace does not exist.
*False. No one will have a single sin forgiven in purgatory. If you have unforgiven mortal sin when you die, you will go to hell. Purgatory is ONLY the use of the grace of Christ to purge us of iniquity and perfect us to be in the presense of God, as according to scripture. *

**6. The Roman Catholic Church claims visions and apparitions in an effort to add false doctrine. **
Because public revelation closed with the death of the last apostle, no vision or apparition may be the sole basis of the formation of doctrine.

7. The Roman Catholic Church uses a rosary for their prayers, Islam uses prayer beads. The rosary/prayer beads are concepts taken from paganism.
These are their assertions, they need to prove that 1) pagans commonly use prayer beads with similar meditations to the rosary and 2) that this pagan practice both predates the rosary and inspired it. If they don’t prove that, then just dismiss it as a baseless assertion.

**8. The Pope is the vicar or substitute of Christ for the Roman Catholic Church. **
*Vicarius does not mean “substitute for”, it means “one who stands in place of” or “who speaks with the authority of”. Granted that Christ plainly said “he who hears you, hears me” this seems like a VERY reasonable and scriptural title. *

**9. The Roman Catholic Church has their own divorce system. The Roman Catholic Church grant anullments **
Annulment is not divorce and may not be granted to nullify a valid marraige. Catholicism is famous for not sanctioning divorce or allowing divorcees to “remarry”, so I don’t know where they got that.

10. The RCC organizations believes that leaving the church will result in eternal damnation.
False. The Catholic church does not teach that anyone can be known to be in hell.

*11. The Roman Catholic Church base some of their doctrine on pagan traditions. For The Roman Catholic Church the traditions of a goddess, rosary, pope, relics, purgatory, transubstantiation, praying to dead people, and idol worship are all based on paganism.
These are their assertions. Make them prove that 1) these practices actually ARE pagan practices, 2) that these pagan practices were commonplace PRIOR TO their institution in the church, and 3) that they were the inspiration for church practices (ie, something done in japan in 200 AD was probably not the inspiration for something starting in Israel in 205 AD)

14. The Roman Catholic Church has added the Apocrypha to support false doctrine.
The deuterocanon is included in all catholic bibles, as it was included in EVERY bible based on the vulgate up until the 1500s. Granted that the vulgate is the oldest complete compilation of the bible, this would seem to be the correct way to go.

15. The Roman Catholic Church priest system (including Popes) has a history of sexual abuse of women and children.
So does every organization with more than 100 members that is older than 50 years old. People sin. It’s unfortunate and we, like all others, are fighting it, but it will happen.

16. The Catholic Church believes in using FORCE to spread their version of the one true god to the unbelievers.
No we don’t believe that.

17. Both religions believe in a union with the state or of using the police powers of the state to compel obedience to their tenets.
No we don’t believe that.

18 The RCC has a “holy” shrine in which the believers are taught to look to as their headquarters e.g. The Vatican.
The vatican is not a shrine, even though it does contain some “shrines”. You know who else had a central area with a magisterial teaching authority headquartered there and ordained by God? The Jews in Jerusalem.

I cannot imagine having the patience to go through line by line and try to instruct someone who actually believes those miss-characterizations. They are such childish arguments against the church, It is like they made a decision to hate the Catholic church because it has to be demonized so that they can feel that their belief system is correct. In this process they accept cart-Blanche any argument no matter how ridiculous against the church at face value simply because it reinforces their deeply held prejudices. I guess that how a semi-rational person can read a Jack Chick comic and feel enlighten about the evils of Catholicism

God Bless
