With the dearth of priests (1) and deacons (0) in my neck of the woods no one has the luxury of picking and choosing an officiant for their wedding. You have your parish priest and that’s it.

A priest who is a family friend or relative also must make sure to be legally able to officiate. My former pastor found that out the hard way when he officiated at his niece’s wedding without the proper legal authority to do so in her province. He thought that because he’d once had the authority he would always have it. Didn’t realize that the minute he moved to another province his authority ceased. Hard to explain to your niece that because of your mistake she’s not legally married.
