American Catholic Bishop’s response:
“Given the wide range of circumstances involved in arriving at a prudential judgment on a matter of this seriousness … bishops can legitimately make different judgments on the most prudent course of pastoral action,” said the document Catholics in Political Life.
More blah, blah, blah from the American bishops. Well, you have to give them credit, they appear to be protecting Christ in the Eucharist as well as they protected children and young adults from abuse.
Do they take their position seriously or are they ruled by the almighty dollar and wanting to be “nice and kind” to everyone and anyone (including child molesters and those who have no respect from the Eucharist).
You can cut and paste this policy to their previous policy on sex abuse… “Given the wide range of circumstances involved in arriving at a prudential judgment on a matter of this seriousness (of child sexual abuse)… bishops can legitimately make different judgments on the most prudent course of pastoral action (whether that be shuffling abusive priests from parish to parish or ignoring complaints or whatever they think is prudent).”
Francis Cardinal Arinze has it correct. It is a no-brainer.
And it is not just for politicians. When was the last time you heard the bishops and priests come to the defense of the Eucharist by telling — Cafeteria Catholics (heretics), those not living the gospel and following the ten commandments (those in mortal sin and who refuse to change/go to confession), etc — not to present themselves for communion until they have a change of heart/lifestyle (conversion)?
I am clueless why we are only focusing on politicians. The reason why these politicians feel like they have a “right” to receive the Eucharist, is that abuse against the Eucharist has been prevalent since the 1960s/1970s and virtually nothing is done about.
Gone are the days when Protestants and revolutionaries come into a church, smash the altar, take the hosts and step all over them. It was too easy back then to condemn those actions. There is a silent desecration of the Eucharist going on now and nobody is doing anything about it.
