ROGERS, Ark. – An Arkansas woman has given birth to her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar delivered the baby girl by Caesarean section Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. The baby, named Jordyn, weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and was 20 inches long, according to Chris Finnegan of TLC network, which broadcasts a weekly show about the Michelle and her husband Jim Bob and all the Duggar children.

Finnegan said the mother was tired but resting after the birth of her latest child.

The show is called Seventeen and Counting. Finnegan said the name would be updated to account for the latest addition to the family. He said TLC also will air a show Monday on the baby’s delivery

That’s amazing…God bless that family! I love watching their show.🙂 They have an entirely different lifestyle and different way of making decisions for/with their kids, but I think that it’s great to see how well behaved, loving, and thoughtful all of the kids seem to be. Thank you for sharing. And Mom Duggar seems like such a sweet lady.

Wow. I can barely handle my 2 kids, I can’t even imagine 18 LOL

I’m gobsmacked - I can’t imagine anyone managing a household with so many children.

Wonder how the older children feel about having children of their own.

The more the merrier:)
I dont like the name Jordyn. No intention to derail the thread but Im not a big fan of names where you cant tell if its a boy or a girl plus I dont like random ys that seem to have gained popularity.

I wonder if she can keep going until her older grandchildren are old enough to help look after her youngest kids?

I admire her and husband to being so open to life.

They have a really nice family and I like watching their show…

Um is that a boy or a girl name?

Not a big fan of the family but I gotta say she’s a brave lady for going through pregnancy and birth 18 times.

It’s a unisex name. My son is Jordan…My college roommate’s daughter is a Jordyn.

This wouldn’t have been news 100 yrs ago. How sad that things have changed so much that anyone having a large family is seen as some kind of freak, to be gawked at on tv. 😦 Our society is so messed up now that anything over 2 is ‘a lot of kids’.
God bless them, now if they’d just convert!

They don’t “manage” it. After watching just one of the bizarre TLC specials on them (long before they got their own show) it becomes pretty clear that a good deal of the duties, the endless cooking, cleaning, *parenting * are pawned off to the older kids. And I don’t mean just normal chores that kids do but serious housework and responsibility that comes with having 18 children. And by older children I should clarify and say 9 times out of 10 its the girls who get saddled with everything. The boys do nothing, relatively speaking.

The Duggars have a wonderful form of brainwashed built in slave labor. But this is the mania of the Quiverfull movement…

That’s an interesting point, but I don’t think the boys do nothing. I do take issue with some of their lifestyle choices, which are largely governed by their religion (the girls can’t wear pants, no tv watching whatsoever, etc) That being said, how about in my parents, and grandparents and great grandparents’ days? The kids really helped out a lot more than they do today. So, it could be that our culture has shifted so far the other way, that it’s hard to identify with a family who has their kids helping out so much with what ‘should’ be parenting responsibilities.

Those girls (and boys) seem to be pretty well adjusted. I mean, on the show, we only see a glimpse of things, but they seem to be pretty easy going, intelligent, and well adjusted. Oh, and happy! ha

Huh. So who is the official authority on what the parents need to do and what is “proper” for kids to do? Who says cooking is only for Mom and Dad? Tell you what, those kids are going to know how to run a household by the time they leave the house, which is a **lot **more than I can say for most kids living in families with only a few children (where the parents do almost everything). The Duggar boys, from what I recall, do all the maintenance of the family vehicles. I wonder how many boys in “normal” families know how to do that. And I also wonder how many girls in “normal” sized families can cook a meal for 20. Wow!

Not very long ago, kids (mostly boys) were kept home from school during the harvest and planting seasons to help with the farm work. Many family farms just couldn’t have made it without the help of the older children. And those generations certainly seemed to turn out better than today’s young adults who have entitlement written all over them. I shudder to think about what might happen when today’s spoiled kids grow up and are faced with making sacrifices to do what is right.

You’d do well not to blindly trust anything you see on TV as being a complete and accurate portrayal of the show’s subject. They will portray things in a way they think will bring in the highest ratings and promote their views, not what is necessarily the *real *picture. 😉

Well she is definately brave for going through another birth and pregnancy. Beyond that though I donlt really like this family at all though. It seems to me what likely started out as something good has become little more then a popularity/attention thing.

I LOVE this show and I love the Duggars. What I think is most amazing about this family in addition to their morals and religous convictions is the fact that they do have all of those kids but they don’t rely on anyone for financial help and they are completely debt free. Their house is even paid for. Those kids are going to grow up not only knowing how to run a household but I am sure they will learn financial stability and responsibility from their parents as well.

And the reason their last kid is named Jordyn is because all of the kids have names that start with ‘J’ and I guess they are running out of names. 😛

If DH and I were able to have kids, I cannot say that I would raise my family/run my household this way, but I commend the Duggars for being completely open to life. Their children are beautiful and well cared for, and I am very impressed with the parents’ financial management. They all seem happy. 🤷

you take issue with a family not watching tv? What’s it to you?

I don’t mean that in a spiteful way, really. But why is it an “issue” for you if they don’t watch tv?

I dare you to not have tv in your house for a month. One gets extremely desensitized to what is on…your house will be so peaceful…and then when you see what is on while at a restaraunt, you won’t believe that you had it going on in the house. Not only the subject matter, but the rate that images are thrown out.

Keeping girls as girls and wearing skirts…I don’t do that, but I don’t have an “issue” with another family teaching their girls that.

As the oldest of a family with only 10 children, I’m trying to wait for children as long as possible. I started changing (cloth) diapers back when I was 5, and now I need to spend some time not being a mother. When I was still living with my parents, I did pretty much everything for the younger children. In fact, being pregnant and breastfeeding are pretty much the only things I didn’t do for those kids. Yeah, I know how to cook, clean, and care for children, but I don’t find that these things give me much of an advantage over my peers. None of these things are that hard to pick up.

Wow, how many siblings did you have when you were 5?

You know, unless I see kids on TV who are being abused or exploited (the Jon and Kate show comes to mind, the way they film the kids in the bathroom and getting baths is just weird), I try not to criticize the parenting going on. Because I’m sure there are people out there who would think I’m a neglectful parent right now, eating my lunch in front of the computer while my kids play together, with no parents directing their play. Or the way my oldest gets the little kids their cereal in the morning while I’m still waking up over my Earl Grey.

Point is, everybody parents differently. Are the kids fed, healthy, learning age-appropriate skills? I think so. My eight year old does his own laundry, is that child labor? No, he’s learning how to be a participating member of the family, one who pitches in.

In the modern age, I think we have glamorized and idealized childhood. It’s supposed to be all play, no work. Which results in college-age kids who balk at writing a four-page essay (my students back when I was teaching that level), or who can’t be bothered to spell check, or come to class on time, or even read the assignment.

Personally, I think the Duggars are teaching their children how to pitch in, be part of a team, and a good work ethic. That’s just my opinion.

And I don’t criticize baby names because my own choices have been mocked, and I think it’s cruel. Unless they’re naming the kids Pluto Nash or things like that, let them be. 🙂
