I’m doing some reading on the Armenian Catholic Church. Is anyone here particularly familiar with the history of this specific church?

According to Attwater’s classic “Eastern Catholic Worship” (1945), the 100K strong Armenian Catholic Church of that era was centered in Syria. Who knew. There is a poster here, “Ghosty”, who is Byzantine Catholic of Armenian origins. He probably knows a lot, but unfortunately doesn’t seem to post all that often lately.

In the meantime, here is a promotional-type video about this church from some kind of Catholic media organization: The Armenian Catholic Church

Note that this is all told from a Roman Catholic view, obviously at variance with Armenian Orthodox history (I’m thinking here of errors like “in 506…the Armenian Church embraced the Eastern Orthodox faith”…um…no?). But, as with most things, an unbiased viewpoint is impossible to find. And it’s still pretty interesting, all told. 🙂

I guess he is a bit ghostly for a Ghosty.

I read this:
From among the Catholicoi of Etchmiadzin, Stepanos Salmastetzi (1543-1552) travelled to Rome in 1548. He remained there till the jubilee year 1550. According to the testimony of contemporaries, he was in communion with the Popes Paul II and Julius III to whom he is said to have declared his obedience. [9]

Bias and perspective aside, I wish I knew who this Stepanos Salmastetzi was. I looked up the Catholicoi in the Wikipedia list of Armenian ones, but I did not see this name.

You can contact Father Vartan Kazanjian in Beirut, he is the secretary of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate, I am sure that he will help you. his email is : vartankir@gmail.com, phone number 961 1 570 555
