I saw this at crayola’s website and thought it looked cool: http://www.crayolastore.com/imagesEdp/p49334b.jpg
It is 3 foot by 4 foot and washes off… Nice mural size for bedroom wall.

oops…looks like it is for outdoors and washes off with garden hose…I like it even more now! Oh…and it uses sidewalk chalk paint!

Perhaps this was mentioned . . . when our kids were little they LOVED the Fisher Price tape player. At one point we had two of them 🙂 That and some fun songs or book and tape sets will be used for a long time. —KCT

**Y’all may not agree that is an artistisc gift but what about the Fisher Price digital camera? Then she can learn about creating mixed media? I guess being inlvolved in digital arts and media i tend to think more along the lines of photos being art:)

I just think it would be neat to be able for her to see and learn how to view things and make a image come to life:)**

Of course it’s artistic! My two older daughters got digital cameras last year with photo printer paper and scrapbooking materials. They haven’t even scratched the surface of all that artistic potential yet, and pictures and scrapbooks last a lifetime. 🙂

I don’t have time to read all the responses, so I apologize if I’m way off the mark here.

My friend’s son received the best gift he ever got from his grandma when he was four or five. It was a box of tape! Scotch tape, masking tape, strapping tape. He used it and used it and used it (on everything, with parental guidance) and had the time of his life!

I’m a big advocate of chalk boards for children. The chalk can be used on the board or on the sidewalk. And they can draw, write, erase everything and do it over and over again. Depending on available space, the larger the chalkboard (and the more it resembles the ones used in schools) the better. But remember, “large” is relative to a five year old. My students LOVE to write and draw all over my board. Even my middle school students last year couldn’t keep their hands off it!

Best of luck, and enjoy the journey!

I just read a couple of the posts, and I had to add one more thing - inspired by the person who suggested the chest of drawers to organize things.

If you have any need for, and can fit in a piece of wooden furniture to organize things - let her decorate it herself. She could collage using the decopage stuff (put a coat of polyurethane on top when she’s done), she could paint and stamp, she could come up with things none of us would imagine. When I was painting the ballusters for our front porch, my then 2 year old son loved helping to paint something “real” for the house. Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Crafts, Michael’s all sell relatively inexpenisive (when they’re on sale for ½ price).

Have fun.

Originally we got her barbie, pollypocket, and a bunch of other toys. Last night I took them all back because I knew she would play with them for awhile but they would ed up discarded. We don’t want to get just a bunch of stuff she sees on television. We want her gift to be intentional and that expresses WHO she is.

My 5 year old girl LOVES to cut, color and paste.

For Christmas we want to do an art themed gift but we are really stuck as to what to included.

She has an easel and a desk.

The problem is that so many art things are really cheap and plastic and we want to move away from buying a bunch of “stuff” and get something more meaningful. We have already gotten a gift to express our faith but want to get something really fun for her to play with.

This art theme is her “big” gift.

The problem is that I don’t want to get a bunch of little things but I am really stuck!

Ideas of special things we could include? Remember, she is 5.

Thank you for your help!
The more suggestions the better
I would say the best thing to do is:
-buy a set of drawers, however big, with atleast 6 sections,
-fill drawer No1 with colouring stuff, such as crayons, textas, pencils and stuff like that,
-fill drawer No2 with foam cut outs and squares of fabric and maybe a kiddie sewing kit,
-fill drawer No3 with paper, of the coloured and blank variety,
-fill drawer No4 with funky, funny cut outs scissors that make cool patterns
-fill drawer No5 with glitter pens, paint and paint brushes,
  • In drawer number 6, put little things like maybe some chocolate and just one barbie, or bratz or polly pocket.
I am sure that what ever you buy, it will make a merry Christmas!!
    Lots of Christmas-y Lurrrve,
    Wammy.

LOVE the tape idea! She loves tape I didn’t even think of that!

My 7-year-old nephew just got addicted to perler (or fuse) beads (I was hard-pressed for an arts and crafts project and used it as a filler and he got hooked!) Now perlers may be too small for a 5-year-old’s fine motor skills, but if you look in the crafts section at Wal*Mart, you’ll find a lot of stuff that younger children could use. They have bags of the peel-and-stick foam shapes and letters (no glue! Yay!) that can be embellished with markers or glitter glue pens. They have the picture frames, photo albums, doorknob hangers, etc. that can be used with with the foam shapes and can be used as gifts that SHE made for others!

How funny is that! I just bought one today on ebay because I remembered seeing it on TV. I spend a few dollars more than I would have in the store but they are sold out everywhere! I guess it is safe for her age to use too!

Awesome thank you!
I’d forgotten I wanted to buy one of these til I read your comments. I went to the Crayola website www.crayolastore.com and bought one there, the shipping was 5.95.

I want to thank you ALL for your help. I have read your ideas and followed many of them! I dont’ know what I would do without this community of creative “friends”.

I got the first few things from Lillian Vernon and I even got free shipping with a code I found online!
I just got the box today and it is great quality stuff and really fun!

**HERE IS HER GIFT! **
  • A big roll of paper on a wooden dispensing system
  • **A “fish” tape meaure for her to measure things (which she loves to do) **
  • A personalized butterfly pencil case with 12 pencils with her name on them (she will love that)
  • A kit of 20 wooden Dinosaur stamps with 6 ink pads (she loves dinosaurs)
  • A package of “real” paint brushes
  • A 24 color watercolor set (crayola)
  • Tape
  • Glue sticks
  • Shrinky Dinks (I didn’t know they still made them!)
  • Those paints with the brushes attached! (Elmers)
  • Crayola fun pads for painting and drawing
  • The Crayola cuttiing machine
Okay, I know that is “A LOT” but the idea was to not get JUNK and to keep focused on a theme.
We decided to go with the corkboard idea for her room, to put above her desk and provide a little wooden cubby system for her to keep things orgaized. And I loved CT’s idea about having a little something to help her clean up after herself.

Thank you again, I am so thrilled about giving this gift but I know it really reflects who she is as a little girl.
