Okay… brief disclaimer. I realize the linked video has an agenda, and that is not what im wanting to address. im addressing as the title suggests “Art” not theology per se, and DEFINITELY not the theology of the producer of this video… basically, hes the black version of the white supremacist religion or whatever you call it… enough about that.

during the course of the videos, he zooms in on various carvings, painints, etc…
  1. the door
  2. the stain glass window (yes its the one with dove in the middle, symbol of Holy spirit, etc., case closed on this one, no need to elaborate on this individual picture)
  3. list of popes, etc
so, basically my question is… what is the story behind the individual decor items, like the little demon looking head on the bottom of the list of popes, or the little skelton dude on the door… this guy of course is anti catholic and is thus making his own position which we all know, no need to elaborate on that…

but why these for lack of bettter word- macabe/slightly demonic-looking things? is it all merely coincidence? it seems to me if i was wanting to decorate a holy building, i would not put those sorts of images in there…

I know the the first and second temples were beautiful and were decorated according to Gods explicit requirements. but i also dont remember reading anything about skeletons and such… Im really just curious whats the story behind those art peices, why are they in the church, etc etc… is their a particular reason that its a six sided star around the Host on the stand that holds the Host in the center of it? or the statue of puck/satyr kissing a mans foot or what not…

part of my understanding and i expect part of the answer is that the St peters/vatican is a church, but is also a museum.
 
If thsi is from the Vatican museum then the simple reason they are in there is the same reason you might find similar things in any museum.

AS to skulls etc the purpose of them is to serve as memento mori’s, that is to remind us that we are mortal and we will have one day to face death and then judgement.

thats pretty much what i thought, if you look for error and evil, you will find it. I just cant figure out how to succinctly put it… whats that term for “using an (insert noun) just because, without any particular reason or intent to portray specific ideas, etc”

sort of like if you asked me to draw a star, i might just out of habit draw a pentagram… but im not a satanist. nor do i wish to promote that system…
 
Ok I have now actually watched this video and it is absolutely ridiculous I mean what is the background music all about, sounds like the background to a bad ghost train.

Where he is saying Sun Worship is actually just the stained glass window depicting the Holy spirit descending with the sun shining thorough it, it is above the Tabernacle on the Altar of the Chair of St Peter, and it is the tabernacle containing the Blessed Sacrament that any Catholic would be focusing on and praying to, the sun shining through the window just looks cool that’s all as well as light having a number of meanings in Christianity as is found in the scriptures.

The second bit is simply Eucharistic adoration taking place, worshipping Christ in His body and Blood, the Son, not the sun.

The Third part goes to what looks like a painting of the BVM been assumed into heaven which he labels worship of the queen of heaven, Catholics revere the Blessed mother and recognise her as the Queen of Heaven and it is no secret so I presume you don’t have a problem with that either.

Fourth the succession of Popes, that is not actually the list of succession it is the list of the Popes buried at St, Peters as teh guy who shot the video would know if he could read the Latin inscription reading SUMMI PONTIFICES IN HAC BASILICA SEPVLTI (Popes buried in this Basilica.).

As to the horned head it could mean a number of things or it could merely be a decorative feature with no meaning, if I had to guess at a meaning and assuming it is the devil, it could just as easily be a horned Moses, then I would say given its position under the names of the Popes at the foot of the inscriptions it could represent the Popes triumph over the devil treading him under foot so to speak.

It is not at all unusual to find depictions of devils and demons in a Catholic church from a certain period, it was at one time for example traditional to decorate the wall of the exit from the church building with such figures as a reminder to the faithful as they left that outside of the confines of the church you are back in the war zone were the prince of this world battles against us.

Fifth, the altar is not called the altar of lies it is called the Altar of the Lie, so called because of its mosaic altarpiece. It shows the sacrilegious fraud committed by Ananias and his wife Sapphira, who lied to St. Peter about the price of a field sold by them, and were therefore immediately struck dead. (Acts 5:1-11)

Sixth, the claim that the statue of St. Peter is really one of Jupiter is completely unfounded and utterly ridiculous. And there is no idolatry going on the people are showing reverence to St. Peter with the statue merely giving thm something visual to focus their mind, they know the statue is not Peter, is not alive and is not a deity.

Seventh, again no one is worshipping the dead body of St. Jerome they are showing reverence for his relics and showing reverence for St. Jerome who is still alive in heaven.

Eight, dragons are decorative features that are popular in heraldry, the symbol of Wales is a dragon are all Welsh people devil worshippers? No.

And a lot of the stuff there is merely artistic expression, the satry kissing the mans foot could represent the victory over paganism with the satyr representing paganism, that one just came to me.

All this nonsense is why the scriptures warn us not to throw our pearls before swine, they don’t appreciate or understand and wish only to trample them and us into dust.

goodness, yea was attempting to warn folk in advance that this guy was anti catholic and so expect wrong names, etc etc and so forth and mentioned the “sun” thing and its answer… but the stuff about putting gargoyles, “Demons” and such to help ppl sort of cement the idea that the church protects from evil… evil on the outside, etc… is new to me but makes since…

as far as the statue, I was under the impression (not from this guy, and not even from a “anti catholic” guy) that that particular statue was originally a statue of Jupiter, but was renamed… i didn’t know what that altar was called (again i assume folk like the guy in the video who spew hatred- would mis name it) but yea, his names are wrong, sure… but I was asking about cultural significance of various motives at the various times they were “constructed” but sorry if i want clear, i know catholic teaching as i read the source documents (councils, the CCC, etc) anyway if you know of any “art history of various quote questionable pieces” I would appreciate it, folk go to great lengths to attack religion and the church, etc…

And the keys are a big give away its not nor ever was Jupiter, Jupiter never had anything to do with keys you just have to compare statues of Jupiter to this statue to see it is not Jupiter, the statue of St. Peter is fully clothed for one thing.
