So when we announced that I was pregnant with number two, due in five weeks, my MIL said, “Are you sure you’re ready? It’s way too soon to be trying to have two kids (further apart than my husband and his sister).” My aunt told me that we should have used contraceptives (she’s a Catholic who believes that God has no place in the bedroom). I got so many comments about how we were having children too close together and hadn’t we heard about birth control, despite telling everyone that we planned this child to be 21-27 months younger than the last and they’ll be 22-ish months apart.

However, since it took five years for me to get pregnant the first time, I certainly heard plenty of negative things from other Catholics about not having kids. To stop that, we usually told them that we needed prayers for children and health issues. I’m an only child due to cancer and when people start ragging on my mom for only having one, I tell them that health issues like cancer are a little more important than siblings and ask for their prayers. Perhaps you can try that, Convertin99. The busybodies in my parish like it when you ask them to pray for your problems, and leave you alone. (I’d pick a problem you don’t mind the whole town knowing though, like a generic health issue - example: pray for an improvement in my health - or a simple problem your kid has with school, like trouble memorizing times tables.)
