The church bell, dedicated to the virgin Mary, has been hanging since yesterday in the new church of the Society of St. Pius X on mount Lien in Schramburg-Sulgen. Father Gerd Heumesser, the chapel clergyman, climbed up the scaffolding yesterday along with the craftsmen to get a look at the work in progress.
Before the bell was lifted to its place with a special crane, it was first necessary to place the seasoned oak bell frame up in the tower. As it turned out that was harder than expected. The bell frame didn’t fit through the opening that has been prepared and so it had to be disassembled and then once again bolted together in place – a task that took an hour and a half.
Then it was time for the bell, which swung towards its designated home, and which, upon arrival, was immediately rung as a test. The bell weighs 640 pounds, is 30 inches in diameter, and rings in the note of C. It was cast by the Voegele company in Strasbourg out of bell bronze with an 22% tin component that is particularly stable, as Fr. Gerd Heumesser explained.
After raising the bell, that was solemnly dedicated on the day before by Father Franz Schmidberger out of Stuftgart, and after a well-earned noontime break, the craftsmen began the work of setting the peaked roof upon the belltower, also with the crane. After eight years of construction on the new church by the Schramberg community, the work is right on schedule, explained Father Heumesser in response to a query.
At 9:00 AM on the coming Pentecost Monday, May 28, a four hour long mass of dedication will begin. Bishop Tissier de Mallerais will solemnly consecrate the new “St Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church”. All are invited to a celebratory banquet beginning at 1:30 PM in the community banquet hall in Sulgen. Confirmation is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
According to the Society of St. Pius X, the new church in Schramberg-Sulgen is now the 12th newly constructed church of the Society in Germany. At present. the priests of the Society are in charge of a total of 50 chapels [in Germany].
The new church “Mary of the Annunciation” will have an open house on Sunday, June 10th, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. The public is invited to come and get to know the new church at that time. Father Heumesser will be showing the church and will also give a powerpoint presentation of its construction.
