“The listing’s description reads, “Real Catholic hosts, ordained by an authorized Catholic priest. / To abuse for classic black fairs or black magic purposes!”

It is being offered by a store that sells satanic items for witchcraft and black masses.

Etsy is an e-commerce website that sells millions of handmade or vintage items and craft supplies in particular. These items fall under a wide range of categories… (From Wikipedia)

Someone (a Catholic) allegedly bought the item to return to a priest. If you try to go to the listing on Etsy’s website, the page is not there anymore. I’m not sure if that’s because the item sold or if people complaining about it got it pulled.

When I see that a Catholic bought it, I admit I have mixed feelings. In one sense, I’m relieved that the hosts will be disposed of properly. On the other hand, I feel like this is an easy way for an unscrupulous person to swindle money from devout Catholics. The hosts don’t even have to actually be consecrated. All a person has to do is post a listing, get it picked up by some Catholic blog, and then some well-meaning Catholic will pay any price to buy them.

We’re playing right into the hands of the unscrupulous and financially rewarding them for their misdeeds.

Probably a more likely scenario then someone actually stealing any significant number of consecrated hosts.

If I remember correctly, the shop was sued by the Church for having stolen consecrated hosts from a Mass.

Turned out, they were not consecrated and both the lawsuit and the ad were removed.

Was that for this particular case? I do recall that happening some time ago, but that was for a listing on eBay. This article is about a listing that was recently put up on Etsy.

I believe it was

People didn’t realize that Consecrated Hosts are owned by the Church and can not be removed from the Church with authorization.

Several of us already reported this to Etsy last week. Didn’t want to post it here for fear of violating TOS by getting everyone to go to the website. I would imagine there was quite a deluge of Catholics complaining about this, as it appeared last week on Lifesite too, I thought.

Abominable sacrilege whether they are consecrated or not. That’s the first thing. Beyond that they are either guilty of theft against the Church or consumer fraud (as warped as this seems) against whatever maniacs would be interested in buying what they believe are consecrated hosts to desecrate. Fortunately it seems it’s the latter case.
