Articles on MTV not being good for teens?

Hi all, my teenage daughter (13, so we’re just beginning) is really mad that I won’t let her watch MTV or go to MTV.com. Apparently ‘all her friends do it.’ Uh huh.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any good references to articles about why watching stuff like this is not good for you. I am specifically interested in something directed towards teens vs. a parenting article.

My mom just told me that I was not allowed to watch MTV or listen to KROQ (until high school). She didn’t give me a reason. But now I look at the difference between myself and my friends that did watch MTV, and the reason is quite apparent. I thank goodness that she never let me watch it, I might have turned out differently (probably a lot worse).

Mom still doesn’t let us do either (and I am a freshman in college)… i really don’t care, though.

I lost all interest in both MTV and KROQ. She doesn’t have to say no anymore 😃

I’m one of those “Mom’s” who would not let my kids see MTV even back in the late 80’s. But you know what they admitted they didn’t miss it. If they(MTV) just stuck to " some what clean" music viedos it would be find but when they started their own shows, dirty viedos, that was it. No more.

You are making the right decision. My mom refused to have MTV in our house when I was a teenager. (im thirty now) I watched it at my friend’s houses, but it didnt’ have an big affect on me. My friends, however had it on 24/7 and didn’t come from religious backgrounds, so were GREATLY influenced by MTV, the sex, the promiscuity, homosexuality, the materialism and relative morality. I think the MTV of your daughter’s generation is worse then when I was a kid. Keep it blocked out of your house, it is depraved. The most important thing you can do is discuss what she does see and make sure she is able to make good moral judgements about what she sees while visiting friends, etc. You are making the right decision. It is extremely influential.
 
I quit watching MTV years ago when they stopped playing music videos. VH1 took their place for a while but all of it is just trash TV for brain donors now and so no one at my house (and I have 2 sons at home age 18 & soon-to-be 21).

If they took that stuff off cable, I doubt anyone would miss them except their bankers.
 
THere was a wonderful program on frontline that talked about MTV and youth culture. I made my oldest son watch it. He occasionally watches MTV but he doesn’t watch that much. A way to defeat your daughter’s interest without actually having to fight with an all out ban is to find legitimate reasons to make fun of the channel.

MTV is run by VIACOM, a huge money making racket. It is not run or controlled by young people but by middle aged and older men. The show on Frontline, made the media organization appear very manipulative. Here is an example of Viacom’s manipulation.

According to frontline, Limp Bizkit-a rather talentless heavy metal group-actually paid money to have some of their videos played. Because the people at Viacom thought that Limp Bizquit(Can’t remember this particular incorrect spelling) was edgy, they pushed the group on young people. For a short while this was a popular band. It wasn’t teenagers that decided what to play but the older men who run Viacom.

My son is pretty disgusted with the lack of music on MTV. Point this out to your daughter. If she wants to listen to music, the radio and internet are pretty good choices.

I have a lot of conversations with my children about not being sheep and going around with the crowd. If you like history then you can point out different times when it was popular to do things that are now considered wrong. I have actually gotten into wonderful discussion with my sons about this subject.

My sons have come up with an accronym for VIACOM. Vile, Irritating Association of Crooked Old Men.🙂
 
THere is a second MTV channel…MTV II…YOu know you have reached the end of your creativity and usefulness, when you have to create a second channel to go back to the original. MTV has become nothing. I can remember them signing on the air, It was a whole lot different back then.

Your daughter is a typical teen. Just hand in there and stick to your guns. It also helps if you get her involved with a Catholic-Christian Youth Ministry like CFC-Youth.
 
Tell your daughter that I made it all the way through my childhood and teenage years without even having cable because my parents thought it was all trash. I’m still here, at 22. 🙂

She’s really not missing much. They don’t even play videos anymore, like some other posters mentioned. It’s really boring most of the time. (I do admit to watching ‘Made’ sometimes but that’s really it. It’s probably the cleanest show on there) some of the stuff they’ve been putting on the E channel lately though, holy crow.
 
I know this is a rehash, but what little I’ve seen of MTV is vile, depraved, crooked, and more corrupt than an African bureaucracy. The content isn’t just bad. It’s sinful.

I got a similar shock when, a few years back, I read a Cosmopolitan magazine. I thought it was about clothes and makeup!!! Wrong!!! They had an articles about how to “rock his world” by touching certain parts of the anatomy (trying to keep this post from getting obscene) specific diagrams on where to touch yourself for maximum pleasure, guidelines to stripping routines, and condom ads. Not only that, they requested that if you had an STD, that you “warn all sex partners, even casual ones.” “ALL” sex partners? Used to be that people didn’t assume you had more than one, and if they did, someone called you out on a duel!

MTV isn’t quite as bad, I think! But it’s close. I would completely forbid either in my house and I urge you to do the same. THey are sinful and induce people to sin. I would even say they’re a “near occasion of sin” liike what’s mentioned in the Act of COntrition.
 
Aside from Music To Vomit By playing crappy music and demeaning women, should’nt one feed their brain good things? Garbage in equals garbage out.
 
My 10 year old who attends a Catholic school told me that a few of his classmates watch it. We pray every night for those children.

It used to be entertainment when MTV first came on MANY years ago. Now it’s purely a tool of the devil. I’ve never let my children watch it, but I’ve explained many things that appear on it and they understand why seeing that stuff is bad for them. I was thrilled the day that my 9 year old told her father how bad some commercials were that came on regular tv because of the immoral way people acted or were dressed.

I guess I’m just trying to say MTV is pure evil, but be careful…many other channels filter in some of the trash in their sit-coms and commercials. We were watching cartoons on Nickelodeon, and a commercial for MTV came on. AAAAAAHHHH!!!

Nickelodeon is owned by Viacom which owns MTV.

And CosmoGirl is nearly as bad! Seriously. As a teenage girl who reads all the teen mags, Seventeen and so on, and adult ones that are just about fashion- like InStyle- I found Cosmo and Marie Claire to be the worst mags for women/girls. Marie Claire has some great pieces on world culture and calls attention to global issues. So why spoil it with semi-porn? Why is that necessary?? I belong to the supposedly “desensitized” generation, and I had to unsubscribe!!

My favorite is Seventeen- they recently introduced a Faith section, with girls talking about how they involve God in their lives, inspirational quotes- many from the Bible! It’s great. 👍

Yeah, and then on the next page, it’s “the other night when me and my bf were having sex…”, or articles about being a teen lesbian, etc.:eek:

I’ve browsed through a couple of Seventeen mags and been disgusted every time. That faith section included a Wiccan girl in one issue, glamorizing the nature worship, etc. I think it’s best to just stay away from these secular mags, especially at such an impressionable age.
 
MTV is definately NOT for children, I wouldn’t even say it’s good for adults. They had one show on MTV that had a 16 year old girl in a bathtub (I think that was their “Room Raiders” show). Nickelodeon has some really questionable commercials on at times. My Sister watched MTV heavily and still does and her behaviour mimics the junk she watched on that network. She has a real skewed view of society and women.
