I have a friend who’s parents used artificial insemination to have him and his twin. Of course there was no third party involved. The church beleives this is morally wrong, but is this person still not a gift from God? If him and his parents wanted to region the Catholic Church ( they were baptised Catholic) exactly what would have to be done? I mean he is definitely still a person, but what is the Church opinion on that?
Thanks you, and I hope you guys can help me.

The child is innocent because they did not have a choice in how they were born. They would be treated similarly to a child who was conceived by rape.

Of course the child is a human being with all the dignity that the Church attaches to that. It’s no different than a child born out of wedlock, just because the parents sinned, the sin doesn’t automatically give the child a lower status.

As for the parents if they want to return to the Church all they have to do is seek out a priest, make a sincere confession, and that’s it.

Make a sincere confession, AND DO PENANCE. What they did was a serious sin. God made something good come from it (your friend and his sibling). God, and God alone, can make a good result come from a bad choice, but it was still a bad choice.

The Sacrement of Reconciliation is sufficient. If your friends are serious about returning to the Church, they should make an appointment with a priest as soon as possible, the children are not an issue.

One sort of assumes that by going to confession penance will be assigned and done. What it is, is at the discretion of the priest.

I was a lapsed Catholic who fell into fundamentalist atheism for 22 years and I returned to the fold when I was 39. The “penance” after confessing as many sins as I could remember over that time, was the priest jokingly telling me “don’t wait so long next time!”.

I think he figured out that the hell I had fallen into and brought me back was penance enough.

EXACTLY what I was going to write. Word for word, no kidding. Great minds DO think alike!. 😃

To state that a child is innocent of the sins of his parents makes alot of sense. Unfortunately, you need to read Psalm 109. I guess you can say that the ideas put forth on the Old Testament don’t matter anymore, but then you get into all kinds of poop.

Be nice if you could quote Scripture or the catechism about where is says children are not punished for the sins of their parents. Oh, and how about genetic diseases? Things like cancer, mental illness, being good at sports - all these things are passed from parent to child, maybe. How can you so easily say that having parents who sin will not raise children who sin?

I wonnder. We all inherit original sin. Why aren’t we responsible for all sins tied to our lineage?

Which is, of course, the same as a child conceived naturally from sacramentally-wed parents 😉

Merry Christmas!!

Being guilty for sin and being affected by sin are two different things.

Say a man is arrrested and convicted for a DWI incident where someone dies. He goes off to jail. His kids aren’t guilty of DWI . But they are now affected by this sin in that they no longer have a breadwinner in the family, the family reputation is tarnished, the mother gets depressed or has other issued due to missing her husband and the pressure and is no longer available etc. So these kids are not guilty of the father’s crime but they are “punished” in a way for it.This might even continue to the next generation in that dysfunction hurts for a long time in families.

In our case of the family who resorts to sinful methods of reproduction if they do not repent they shut themselves off from the grace that would be available to themselves, their marriage and family. The members of the family will be affected by this loss of grace while not be guilty of what caused it.

This is a two part question, so I’ll answer about the "children" first.

The child is still a gift of God. The Child has no sin, (other than orginal sin that we all have when we are born.) These Twins can still be Baptized in the Catholic Church. They have nothing to be sorry for, as far as their conception or birth. They did nothing wrong. How would they (the children) be treated? With open arms and the love of the Catholic Church. So they are free to stay within the Catholic Church.

Now about the Parents.

I understand how explaining this part may seem a bit hard to understand, however bear with me as I stumble to try to make sense out of it.

First God is against masterbation. Masterbation is a “sin” in Gods eyes. To be able to do artifical insemination a man must first masterbate to “collect” his sperm. The masterbation is the first part of the sin. A man should always “climax” inside his wife, so that his seed doesn’t spill on the ground. Thus since this man did indeed “Masterbate” to collect his seed he was not emptying himself inside his wife.

The next part. The semen of the husband was then “placed” into the wife, by an doctor. This is then a “sin” because it didn’t happen between the husband and wife in the natural act of love making. Lovemaking being a gift from God where two people join together becomming one flesh, in a physcial act of love. Thus open to life (possible pregency) during this act.

Now according to the Catholic Chuch the couple needs to go to confession, to confess, the “acts” or “steps” of what they did out of the bedroom, per say. Not to confess the Pregency it’s self, but the “Acts” of how it came about. Hopefully this makes some sense of explaining it.

I have noticed that a lot of people over time have asked this same “type” of question. People, because we are “human and full of emotion” tend to “think” the Church sees the “Child” as a Sin to go to Confession for…and of course what Mother or Father can see their dear sweet child a sin? And who wants to confess that having that wonderful sweet child as a sin. When the child is not a sin.

The act of Masterbation is the sin. God says to Masterbate is a sin. Then for someone to handle the “spilled seed” outside of the Marriage Sex act and to place it into the Mother, is the other part of the sin. The child/children who result from these two acts are Not a sin. It is only the Acts themselves **prior **to the child/children being concieved that is the sin.

So you see, the child/children are innocent and there is no sin for them, because of the way they were concieved.

To put it another way, the parents didn’t have enough faith that God would bless them with children, so they took matters in their own hands, so to speak. (now I grant you, most likely Doctors told them they’d never have children any other way.) but that’s not the question your asking. You are asking how the Church views this. So that is why I have tried to explain my answer.

I hope my attempt in answering this and breaking it down helps.

I know there must be several Catholic Couples who have gone this route in order to have children, otherwise these “types” of questions wouldn’t come up. People often tend to think in their human emotions, love for their children, that to go to cofession to confess this is like saying they are sorry for their children. This is Not what it’s truely about.

It’s about the **Acts and lack of faith in God **to bless them with children the “natural way” that lead them to their Action to take matters in their own hands.

The children are truely still a blessing from God.

Hopefully my stumbling through this helps and I pretty much believe even a Priest, would say I explained it ok.

Thus since this man did indeed “Masterbate” to collect his seed he was not emptying himself inside his wife.

Masturbate. 😉

You don’t know that for a fact…it is possible that a condom could be used to collect the semen, mixed with a semen “extender” to extend the life of the spermatozoa and then have it injected directly in the uterus.

It could happen that way, unlikely though it may be, so we shouldn’t presume sin where sin may not exist.

That being said, such a technique using a condom could be problematic in a sinful manner as well. 🤷

From the original post, I’ll assume the parents are not going to church. I’ll also assume there was some good reason they had a child the way they did. There is a very good chance they committed no sin. They, if they are concerned about it, need to talk to a priest. If I were them, I wouldn’t be concerned at all.

I think the Church wants you to have kids by having sex. Duh, simple isn’t it? Now if for some reason you cannot do that, assuming you have tried, I am pretty sure the Church wants you to have kids.

Best leave out the details. It becomes just too silly. To many really crazy questions the Church would have to answer.

But, there are good reasons why you shouldn’t use Artificial Insemination. Like if you are married and the sperm is not from your husband and your husband could get you pregnant. Do you all want the Church to endorse Artificial Insemination? But, of course, there are exceptions to everything. That is why you have priests, Bishops and the Church. Not the internet. God help us if we ever believe what we read here.

If the Catechism were the authority the Church wouldn’t say the Bishop was. And it has been that way forever. Look at the Bible, it wasn’t done with Genesis was it? The Church questions things all the time, once in awhile it changes things too.

Now I know there are people that live in a world that does not acknowledge change. Bunch of them on this site too. Anybody that reads this, you get to choose and that is fine with me. Just try and respect that the majority of the Catholic Church believes in ongoing Revelation through the leaders of the Church, ultimately through the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

I don’t think that you can really apply the moral teaching on contraception to their stance on increasing fertility. 😛 Using a condom that increases a person’s fertility does not deny the act it’s natural unitive and procreative properties.

Edit: Sorry, it seems that I’ve misinterpreted what you were trying to say. In that case: No, the Church does not endorse the use of in vitro insemination.

If you use that logic, then the Church’s teachings on IVF, embryo adoption ,etc are moot, no?

Using a condom in such an instance, although admittedly it would be a very unusual situation, separates the unitive and procreative properties of the act of intercourse, which is what the moral objection to the use of contraception is all about!

Actually, it seems that I’ve misinterpreted the post. Sorry for the confusion. I thought he was wondering if it was permissable to extend the life of sperm with condom (chemicals in the condom’s lubricant), and let it freely flow into the woman through a hole in the condom.

OK, no problemo. We’re good then. 👍

No, there is no good reason to have children through IVF. When you dismiss the Catechism as an authority, you have forgotten that it was written by Pope John Paul II, and he had authority to law down doctrine.

The Church wants married couples to have children, but not through in-vitro fertilization. The Church does not shy away from teaching about sex.

A big issue now, not to hijack the thread, is adoption of frozen embryos. No definitive teachings on the practice yet, but there are hints that it’s being frowed upon.

A real toughie from a moral standpoint; allowing the embryos to die in their frozen state vs. rescuing them using a currently prohibited (morally speaking) medical procedure.
