As a Catholic, how important was it for you to find a house with a Church nearby?

As a Catholic, how important was it for you to find a house with a Church nearby?

Was it your top priority?

Was something else a higher priority?

Or did you consider it at all? In other words, did you buy your house and then look for the nearest Church?
 
I’ve actually been very lucky, most places I lived have been in walking distance of a Church. My current parish would be a bit of a long walk, but I could fo it if needed.

Not very. Given the church closures and restructuring, I could need to drive an hour tomorrow (as opposed to a half hour) or wind up with one in my backyard.

This is an interesting insight which I brought up in your thread on this same topic.

You could buy a house with a church a block away and it could be closed due to lack of priests and the need to restructure the diocese.

My criteria for church proximity is “within driving distance”. I am lucky enough that my church is five minutes away. I would certainly drive farther than that if I had to.

That happened to my grandmother and my aunt and uncle. She had a lake house and could walk to church. (house was owned by the family before the church was ever built)

They bought a cheaper property on the river, which was about a 35-40 minute drive to church. (different church, direction–their houses are about 40 minutes apart)

Restructure, both are closed–my grandmother is now 30 minutes away and my aunt and uncle are 5-10.

If I were to buy a house it would be very close to a church so I can have a nice morning walk to church. Two great things in one.
 
I live in my sister’s house, 10 miles from the closest Catholic church, or for the rest of the world 16km. I would rather live close to a church, but, sometimes you have to go with what you can afford, which for me is nothing.

Exactly my sentiments. Especially since we attend daily Mass. Not to mention when the kids were small and it took forever to get the family ready to go.

Yes. The location of the Church will likely change anyway…and I’ll still have to drive no matter what.

You really have to drive a half hour to go to mass? Yikes.

Permit me to clarify:

Are you saying that you looked for a house with a working roof near a Church? Or do you even know if there was any home with a working roof near a Church?

I’m thinking its the latter, but maybe I’ve missed something.
 
Do you NOT get the fact that in my area “near a church” is virtually meaningless?

In my greater area we have “parishes” that are 3-5 churches strung together with a traveling pastor. He lives at none of them.

So no, being “near” a church wasn’t a priority…because it will likely change.

Even if it didn’t it wouldn’t be a high priority because they tend to place churches in town where land is not available.

Also…the houses are few and far between…driving is a must.

That said, I’m always ready for it. I would no more starve because of the distance to the grocer than I would spiritually die becuase of the distance to Mass.

But why do you care what I do…you’ve made it abundantly clear I’m not devout, and I blame everyone else…so I suppose bad on me.

Top priority. Our current home is within 10 minutes of our parish. My family and I have considered moving several times over the past few years. Assuming my husband already has job prospects and that’s why we are looking to move, my number one criteria is for there to be a TLM parish in the area. I would then find a home no more than 30 minutes from the parish and hubby’s work if possible. If there isn’t a TLM parish in the area (within an hour drive) then moving there isn’t an option.
