I am an RCIA coordinator and I have a candidate whose husband was previously married in a non denominational Christian church. Her marriage to him is her only marriage. He is not cooperative with her conversion and will not pursue an annulment for his first marriage. What must happen before she can be confirmed? We cannot get a straight answer from anyone!

Hi,

Here is a straight answer: she cannot enter the Catholic Church while living a sexually active life in an invalid marriage. If she chooses to live in a celibate way until she is able to have a Catholic marriage, it is possible that she could enter the Church. But it doesn’t sound likely since her husband is so uncooperative. You don’t mention any children. It doesn’t sound like he would be willing to have her rear any children they might have in the Church. This could be a marriage breaker. If she left him, certainly she could enter the Church. I will certainly keep her in prayer.
