Funny, last time I checked, checks and balances is still a thing.
Yes, they are ‘still a thing’, as you put it, but when both houses of Congress are controlled by the President’s party, and the Supreme Court bids fair to follow suit within the very near future, then the concept of judicial and legislative checks on the executive branch becomes theoretical at best. Add in to the mix a POTUS who seems to fervently desire the sweeping powers of an absolute monarch, and who brazenly admires and wishes to emulate two of the most brutal dictators on the current world stage, then all the criteria for a possible future slide into fascism for the USA would appear to have been met. Tis_Bearself is quite right that my prior comment was irresponsible hyperbole, for which I can only apologise and ask the forum’s forgiveness. But please know that my concern arises from profound distress at the attempts to undermine the foundations of our democratic republic by putting party politics and loyalty to one man above the upholding of some of the values our country has always prized: family, hospitality, and civil discourse.Funny, last time I checked, checks and balances is still a thing.
That’s a ‘yes’ and ‘no’ kind of thing. A lot of folks in the Republican Party really don’t care for President Trump and are fighting him every step of the way.when both houses of Congress are controlled by the President’s party, and the Supreme Court bids fair to follow suit within the very near future,
The President is a funny guy, and he really knows how to bait his adversaries. He plays the opposition (in both parties) like a Stradivarius.Trump just causes people to drop their facades and show themselves for what they are.
Speaking as a lifelong registered Democrat and lawyer, no, they do not.when both houses of Congress are controlled by the President’s party, and the Supreme Court bids fair to follow suit within the very near future, then the concept of judicial and legislative checks on the executive branch becomes theoretical at best.
And here I thought I was the only one on the planet who remembered thatProbably more free than back in the days when LBJ supporters stuffed ballot boxes.
Because that’s never happened in US historyboth houses of Congress are controlled by the President’s party, and the Supreme Court bids fair to follow suit within the very near future
Except the crime is only relevant when the very nature of it shows that they are a threat to human life. Beyond that, you also have to prove that there was no other possible way to protect human life from them. The executions were justified by the crimes committed by the executed.
2267 Assuming that the guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.
If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people’s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.
Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity “are very rare, if not practically nonexistent.”
How is the USA a dictatorship cloaked on democracy? Trump won and that is that. How exactly is he a dictator? A dictator isn’t simply someone whose decisions you disagree with. And you will get a chance to vote him out next time around if you wish.It is now, and has been since the 2017 inauguration of the current POTUS.
But doesn’t the Steel Seizure case say that presidential power fluctuates with Congress and that sometimes he has almost unlimited power?Speaking as a lifelong registered Democrat and lawyer, no, they do not.
Figuring out who an avowed racist is, that requires vetting as well. Looking at their social media posts and scoring them on insensitivity should be something to consider for anyone at the border.Avowed racists are up there too
A number of these people slaughtered by the (Spanish) Republicans have already been canonized as martyrs. They were killing Bishops, Priests, Nuns and laypeople.
