So when asked “Why did the Church side with Franco?” the simplified answer generally is “Because the other side murdered a ton of Catholics and was super anti-clerical.” When askwd why the other side was super anti-clerical what is the answer? I heard that there was mingling in Spanish politics and that the Spanish CC has associated itself with the political right before the Civil War started. Why was this? I heard something about the new constitution being anti clerical and the left being anti clerical but why were they like that in the first place? Cheers.

Because the “left” side were Communists and the Church has always condemned Communism.

There was a lot of misplaced hate aimed towards the church because of the ideas of the enlightenment such as separation of church and state. That was the main reason, the communist/atheist left wanted to oust the church from influencing the government for a variety of reasons.

The Church has to side with the lesser evil. The Republicans were essentially communists and secularists who murdered Catholics and threatened to oust the Church.

Franco was a great man. Don’t believe the propaganda. He protected the Church.

You can not be serious. Please tell me your not. Franco led a regime which claimed the lives of some 300,000 - 400,000 people. Not to mention his support for the German war machine. Unbelievable.

The left was anti-clerical for the same reason the Soviet Union was anti-clerical, they saw the church as a powerful reactionary force that allied itself with the oppressive government that denied rights to workers, and religion as the opium of the people.

Classic Marxist and anarchist anti-clericalism

I’m very serious. Franco saved millions of lives from communist terror. People forget how sinister, evil and murderous communism was and continues to be.

Marxism is the greatest evil ever inflicted on humanity.

Franco was not a great man. He was a lesser evil, but he got a lot of people killed, women oppressed and banned divorce and abortion.

That said, he was much more preferable to the chaotic republican side of the Spanish Civil War

Very true but many people forget this fact. I’m dumb struck when I see young college kids carrying communist flags on YouTube videos. They’re quick to point out Hitler’s evil deeds but are silent when it comes to Stalin, Mao and the others. I often wonder why Nazism is rightly condemned but the greater evil of Communism gets ignored.

Agreed. He was a man who did what had to be done to protect his country.

Not to mention his support for the German war machine.
He repaid some support he received fighting communists at home by allowing volunteers to go fight communists abroad. Seems he was more anti communist than pro German.

I think he was a man who had to make hard choices to defend his country against communists. I think he did the right thing most of the time, and that it’s unfortunate his legacy is tainted by accusations of fascism. I think he was great in the time period he existed, I dont think his policies would work today.

I think in particular the work of Spanish authorities to protect Jews during the time period should be spoken of more.

I’d also like to add that I don’t think fascism is necessarily a bad thing. Real democracy is impossible in this age. The rich corporations manipulate and brainwash the masses to vote for policies they want. The rich also purchase political office. The result is a dictatorship cloaked in democracy. And this dictatorship has enacted evil laws across the globe. Most of the historical fascist regimes were more friendly towards the Church and the Catholic worldview.

It is unbelievable because this isn’t true.

Franco had a problematic relationship at best with the German Fuhrer.

Hitler and Franco had a summit in 1941, Germany wanted passage for its army through Spain to capture Gibraltar.

The short story was that it never happened. Hitler remarked afterwards that he would rather have his teeth pulled out one by one than to deal with that “impossible man” (Franco)

Germany did help Spain fight off the attempted Communist Revolution in the 1930’s, and Soviet Russia was on the other side. But Spain was not a backer of Germany, and maintained its neutrality during the 2nd world war.
