As I read a Protestant Bible it occurs to me...

Thanks for the insight Anna. 👍
khuldar,

Regarding the Anglo Catholic designation: I think it is becoming more confusing. Some of the Anglicans entering the Catholic Ordinariate are calling themselves Anglican Catholics. They are entering into full Communion with Rome.
As for bibles my main 2 are the Jerusalem bible & the NRSV, I use the NRSV as it is the bible alot of my protestant friends use & when we have discussions about scripture we are looking at verses that are worded the same.
I have been slowly collecting Bible translations. I really want a New Jerusalem Bible. I’ve reviewed it at B&N and find the commentaries very interesting. Also on my list is an Eastern Orthodox Study Bible.

I mostly use the NRSV with Apocrypha for study. I also have the Catholic Comparative New Testament, which I use often.

I have a number of other translations that I used when comparing translations.

Peace and blessings,
Anna

I found a 1966 Jerusalem Bible sitting at a Half Price Books staring at me about a month ago, I couldn’t help but free it from its prison :)😊

As I continue to study, I do wonder why Luther didn’t include the all the Bible. Dumb move on his part.
Because some things in the new testament cancel the old testament like use of priesthood. Catholics-Luthereans-Orthodoxy tend to live in the old testament. The NT says that he is the only Holy Father (Pope) and we should not call anyone else Holy Father, also the same for Protestant/Catholic Reverends and Priests/Fathers. He is the only High Priest. We call our leaders of a church Pastors. The Bible also says that we should not make any image of anything’s in heaven such as Jesus (on the Crucifix), Mary (Statue), Saints (Statues), Angels (Statues), and having the cross as God or Jesus, in other words praying ‘to the cross’ seeing that Jesus or God is there. The catholic church changed the original 10 commandments, thou shall not make any idols or worship them (worship or praying is the same). “Upon this rock I build my church” not Peter you are now a Pope. Mary was also NOT pure, which the catholic church tends to say, ONLY Jesus was free as sin and the NT says that.

The most country with Catholics in the Americas, Mexico, is also one of the most dangerous. “The Zetas” and the other “Narcotraficantes” kill in the name of their catholic saint “La Santa Muerte” (the holy death). To make things worse in latino catholic communities teenagers and their families keep cursing, sining, following the example the show Jersey Shore sets (which some of the people staring in it are in deed catholic or atheist), listening to music like Eminem (which calls himself a christian), Lady Gaga (calls herself a catholic), Jenifer Lopez(catholic), 2pac, jay-z, and other artists that promote sex and violence and cursing. And please I can think of so manny others bad things, maybe it’s not the church but the character, but the catholic church has not done much to stop this.

One of the reasons why most Protestant sects have banned getting drunk, smoking, partying hard, and have PROVEN the ideal of LOSING salvation.

From a Teen Latino ex-Catholic (Mom)/Orthodoxed Evangelical (Dad), now a Pentecostal.

I’m sorry, but the Mexican drug traffickers have nothing to do with the teachings of the Catholic church. Some members, as sinners, are members - and l know that the Church will educate them in the faith so that they may sin no more. The Catholic church is firmly on the side of life, liberty, and decency.

As with any organisation so large and historic - of course you’ll find problems recent and past. But nothing in the Catholic church’s teaching is anything other than decent and kind.

Very wise! These are the same things I noticed and why I’m a Catholic now instead of a Protestant like I was before.

Now, you say Orthodoxy and Catholicism, but you already mentioned the Pope (Peter being the first) as Biblically supported. So that really points more to Catholicism than Orthodoxy.
The Orthodox never disagreed with that 😉

As I continue to study, I do wonder why Luther didn’t include the all the Bible. Dumb move on his part.
Luther had a problem, scripture contradicted his doctrine:

The epistole of St James contradicted salvation by faith alone,he tried to get James removed but failed.

Macabees taught that we could pray for the dead.

Then, the bible of Jesus’ day included seven additional books - as does the Catholic bible. In 100 AD the chief rabbis of the Jews codified the Hebrew scriptures excluding the seven books, some say because Christians included them.

To be different from The Catholic church and to eleminate some of those pesky passages, Luther chose the later version of the OT.

Sidbar to thread topic:

khuldar,
Some Anglicans consider themselves to be Protestant.

An Anglo Catholic is an Anglican whose beliefs swing heavily towards Catholicism. I believe in the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist (no objection to Transubstantiation, though the term may not be used), Seven Sacraments and salvic Graces, Communion of the Saints, Perpetual Virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary-her Assumption-and intercession, prayer for the dead, rejection of the Reformation Solas. Also, the 39 Articles of Religion, which reflect many Protestant influences, is viewed as an unbinding historical document.

Peace and blessings,
Anna
so Anna what ae the differences or at least the main ones? i take it the pope being infallable is one

Why not become a comedian? This is hilarious!

Tell me, if we can’t make images of angels, as you dare to say, what does Exodus 25:18 mean? And if we can’t call a priest father, what does 1 Corinthians 4:14-17 mean?

=Southwell;9489284]Luther had a problem, scripture contradicted his doctrine:

No, it doesn’t, and no, he didn’t.
Macabees taught that we could pray for the dead.
Luther never opposed prayer for the dead. Some Lutheran funeral services include a prayer for the dead. What he didn’t approve of was dwelling on it.
As for the dead, since Scripture gives us no information on the subject, I regard it as no sin to pray with free devotion in this or some similar fashion: “Dear God, if this soul is in a condition accessible to mercy, be thou gracious to it.” And when this has been done once or twice, let it suffice. For vigils and requiem masses and yearly celebrations of requiems are useless, and are merely the devil’s annual fair.
Then, the bible of Jesus’ day included seven additional books - as does the Catholic bible. In 100 AD the chief rabbis of the Jews codified the Hebrew scriptures excluding the seven books, some say because Christians included them.
It may have included more than that.
To be different from The Catholic church and to eleminate some of those pesky passages, Luther chose the later version of the OT.
Source, please, where Luther claims this to be his reason. You don’t think that his reasons could have been the same as his contemporary, Cardinal Cajetan?

This Protestant Bible is leading me into studying Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism, because Protestants don’t believe in Purgatory, Peter being the leader, Mary not being blessed. Yet I will explain why this made me began to ponder.

Luke 12:59 says, “I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” But it if it was talking about Hell, Jesus said once in Hell your in there forever, whats the point of that verse then? He’s talking about somewhere you go and you do suffer but to get all your sins payed for, thus he’s is talking about a 3rd place, because you cannot get out of Hell.

Matthew 16:18 states “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” You can interpret that this is saying Jesus knew Peter would be a good person to place being in charge of the Church.

Luke 1:48 states, “for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,” Mary Knew she was going to be called Mother because she gave birth to God in his human birth,.

My take of Protestantism now:

So far I think they build there entire faith on John 3:16, at least for the most part, that verse does not directly end, meaning that it can be interpreted as that’s the main thing in general for salvation BUT not the only thing.

I think once I finish studying a bit more with this protestant Bible I will quit my Protestant finding in a Church and look at Catholicism and Orthodoxy.
May God Bless you and guide you on your journey.

As you read the Bible, keep in mind that it is about Christ Jesus.

One of the most significant passages in the Bible, for me, is:

John 5:39-40 (NIV)

39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

John 5:39-40 (DRB)
39 Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me.
40 And you will not come to me that you may have life.

Compare translations to make sure you are not missing out. Sadly, not all translations are done in the same philosophy. They range from: Formal Equivalence, Optimal Equivalence, Dynamic Equivalence, and Wild Equivalence (:)). And some have doctrinal biased philosophies on certain words and/or phrases.

There are many free online tools to compare translations side by side. Feel free to PM me and I can send them to you.

Peace,

Jose

To answer the idea that some people who call themselves Catholic are bad can simply be answered as; there are Good Ducks and Bad Ducks in Every Pond. Even if you believe Jesus was saying He is the Church, by telling Peter is saying Jesus handed Peter the responsibility of being the leader of the Church. If a Church isn’t at all like the Orthodox Church/Catholic Church then it’s nothing like the original Church. Tons of Protestants Sin, they cuss, drink, and party like its 1969.

Yes, the Catholics, Lutherans, Orthodox Churches live by the Bible because that’s the way they’re supposed to. The problem with most Protestant sects is that they create their own Laws, many of which are unbiblical. When I say Laws, I mean they create things there members must follow or they threaten their members saying there surely damned for Hell if they don’t follow there laws, as if they were playing God by saying who goes where.

This is a common train of thought, and is even understandable considering that not only the Laity, but even sometimes Clergy can act “unChristian”… But just remember one thing -Jesus said we should judge the tree by its Fruits. He wasnt talking about the rotten fruit that falls off the branch too early. He’s talking about the fruits still attached.

The Saints are the fruits of the Catholic Church. They will never rot, or fall.

By angels I meant spiritual angeles like the holy spirit, and what abouth Jesus he’s In heaven so y do u have him on the cross instead??

True that were all human and sin is in our nature, this is sort of dumb we should be arguing about our beliefs I don’t think Jesus would have acted this way, sorry if I offended anything but I’m Latino and I’ve seen it everyday since I was 5. Even my cousins act that way.

Your polemic is the typical diatribe battle cry of the uninformed Fundamentalist/ Evangelical/ non-denominational/ and fringe Pentecostal crowd on Catholic teaching. If you would like to have an open dialog with Catholics in your family or community, maybe you should look into what the Catholic church actually teaches, instead of what uniformed non-catholics tell you what they THINK the Catholic Church teaches.

There are a number of people (non-catholics included) on this forum that set the record straight on what the Catholic Church teaches. Sounds like you have been woefully under catechized, which is typical of our Catholic brothers and sisters South of the U.S. boarder. I live in L.A. so almost every ex-catholic non-denominational evangelical/ pentecostal I meet was a woefully under catechized Catholic, turned Catholic basher. Catechesis begins at home, so whenever you run across a Catholic un-learnred in the faith, there is often a chain of people that lack knowledge of the Catholic faith

The Catholic Church has called santa Muerte SATANISM, but when the bishop tells the people to stop, what they are doing is outside of the deposit of faith, and evan SATANIC, the people say “noooooo! what we are doing is good, it’s catholic, the white lady answers our prayers!” What else do you want the bishops to do? The bishops speak out and the people do NOT listen, but continue to follow the pervading culture of misinformation, rather than submit to the teaching of the bishops. Why should the Catholic Church assume any culpability in the sin of those who stand in stark opposition to Her teachings?

Here is a link to youtube You will see how Catholic priest and bishops speak out against Santa Muerte, but the stiff necked people in their ignorance, rely on their own understanding and FEELINGS, instead of using the grace that God gave them, the Church to discern truth youtu.be/ZgQftFWM41Q
