Great thread!!
I think that is VERY true. Mystical prayer would only be an illusion from the devil without humility and growing in virtueâŚ
A few years ago I was a baby Christian but read a bit of St Teresa of Avilaâs autobiography. It was interesting how that turned out⌠I thought all the parts about humility and discernment were boring, and the parts where she described her visions and esctasies were of course more interesting. That just shows what a beginning Christian I was

the whole book was way above me, and probably still is. But sometimes I return to it and to the Interior Castle and sometimes I learn a lot from St Teresa. It was partly because of her I saw the importance of having a spiritual director and obeying the Church.
I have a question for those who know about contemplationâŚ
you mentioned that itâs not always linear.
Well on what level of spiritual growth must one be at to start practicing contemplative prayer? When I say âspiritual growthâ I mean things like humility, dying to self, loving God and neighbour, in other words - the asceticism not the mysticism. Letâs say youâre a Catholic in good standing, you go to Confession and receive the Eucharist and pray daily⌠letâs say you feel contrition for your sins and see all the ways you still need to improve, and are trying hard to avoid occasions of sin and always repent when you do sin. You donât seek any spiritual experiences, you just want to serve God and you arenât overly focused on feelings of Godâs presence, etc. However, sometimes you notice that you have certain âmysticalâ experiences, I dont mean visions and such but you communicate with God somehow. For example, during Adoration. Sometimes your prayer becomes remotely contemplative on its own, youâre not trying to do anything.
My question is⌠even though in this example youâre not really spiritually advanced, could the experiences still be from God because you are focused on the right things and are trying your best to grow in humility?
so you donât need to be a Saint before God grants you any âmysticalâ experiences? Iâm not saying this because Iâm looking for such experiences - St Therese didnât have much of them and sheâs one of the greatest Saints, clearly other things matter more - but if you HAD things happen to you in the past, how do you know if they were from God? (letâs assume the experiences passed all the other tests - there was good fruit, etcâŚand youâre planning to discuss this with a spiritual director if you ever get one)
hope my question makes senseâŚ
