only after midnight.

As those who are learned in the liturgical renewal of the Vatican Council will tell you, days of celebration have vigils, days of penance do not.

This is not to say that a certain mindset is found walking around that seeks to restrict joy and extend penance.

It’s going to occur at about seven tonight. Ack.
totally contray to the principles of the liturgical renewal. Clearly some person “noted” we were having worship the evening before an observance but never took to heart the beauty and meaning of the liturgical renewal. It sounds like a weak-minded legalism over a heartfelt embrace of the principles of Vatican II.

Are you certain it isn’t a ceremony to burn the palms to be used tomorrow? My church is having a special service to burn the palms from last Easter.

No, because Lent does not begin until midnight. However, remember that the ashes are a sacramental and can be used as a sacramental any day. One could hold a Penance service in June and impose ashes as part of that service. But they do have a specific meaning for the first day of Lent, setting the tone for Lent.
