Ash Wednesday and Communion

Ash Wednesday

Two questions here. I did something that was grave, but didn’t realize it until after. I did not think it through. It was a spur of the moment thing and felt awful and said an act of contrition. Is this a Venial sin and am I able to receive communion? Also my Episcopalian friend is coming to Mass with us on Wednesday morning. Can he get ashes for Ash Wednesday?
 
It’s my understanding that full knowledge is needed for an act that is grave matter to become a mortal sin.

That said, all are welcome to ashes.
 
Any human may receive ashes.

As for the sin, did you know it was a sin and still did it on purpose? If so, simply refrain and get to Confession.

If you honestly did it accidentally, then, know you cannot commit a mortal sin accidentally.
 
Anyone can get ashes. I mean anyone. As for the sin no one can tell you If it was mortal or venial. You are responsible for your own conscience.

Full knowledge of the gravity of the sin, not “I wasn’t thinking about it at the time.”

Right. And that’s not the “full knowledge” criterion, but rather, the “deliberate consent” one.
