Ash Wednesday: Applying the Ashes [Akin]

Recently there was some discussion on Facebook of how ashes should be placed on the head, with some folks thinking that the form of the cross is mandatory.

It isn’t. There is no set form, and in some countries–like Italy–the norm is to sprinkle ashes on the top of the head.

Today I ran across a picture of Pope Francis doing that, and I thought I’d share it to document the diversity of global practice on this point.

Yep - you can never be sure what you’ll end up with design-wise on Ash Wednesday!

This year at 6am First Mass I found myself being the last guy in the line of an extremely weary old EMHC who appeared to be nodding off between ash applications on his “recipients.”

When my turn finally arrived, it went something like this…

EMHC: forehead poke + unintelligible pious muttering…

me: “Say - did you just give me the ‘Hindoo’?”

EMHC: “Yes. It’s the best I kindoo!” 😃
 
My first February in Ireland, I went to Knock Shrine on Ash Wednesday. The priests there use a wee rubber stamp not their thumbs… I though that this must be the Irish way…
