I see even Amazon has Ash Wednesday ashes for sale. I always wondered where the ashes come from.

I heard it’s from the burning of old palms from Palm Sunday. Is this still true at least for some parishes or is it a manufactured product that is bought somewhere?

We were reminded last week to bring our old palms for burning, for Ash Wednesday. I’m guessing though, that Father kept the undistributed ones from last year as well. I appreciate receiving ashes from my old palms and hope we will never have to purchase them outside. That just seems tacky to buy them, and maybe not even correct — after all our palms were blessed.

It’s my understanding that even the parishes that collect and burn old palms - and they get a LOT of old palms because not every parish collects them so people often have a lot of old palms sitting around their house, I know I took two bags of old palms from my house and my mom’s house to the nearest church that collects this year - often don’t end up with enough ashes to go around from the burning of palms alone, so they have to buy some extra ash.

One of the sisters burns the old palms from Palm Sunday. There are several who bring the old palms back to the church. What is not used is placed in a hole in the ground.

Recycling in not a recent invention as some might say. 🤣

Could I ask if today is a must go mass, I have come back to my faith in the last 5 years, I go every Sunday but to be honest I am still learning.

Our parish buys them in. They arrive cleanly packaged and sieved into fine particles, which would be difficult to do, I’d imagine. We certainly don’t collect in any old ones.

Some priests burn palms, however, for us the resulting ash is not nearly enough. Ash Wednesday masses are standing room only! We purchase ashes from a religious goods distributor, just like we purchase other things for the Church.
