I’m sure we’ve all been in situations of having to “explain” our Ashes to the general public… so I figured this would be a fun thread to share those funnies! 😃

So here’s mine…

I just talked to my parents and HAD to share this with you all…
They went to Ash Wednesday Mass this morning… and received their Ashes during the middle of the Mass.

So at the very end of Mass, my mom leans over in the pew to pick up her purse… and when she stands up my dad was giving her the “look”…
And immediately he says… “Oh wow… you’ve got a HUGE ASH!”

And my mom seriously didn’t get it.

She started to tear up and said "Oh I guess I shouldn’t wear these pants anymore… " :crying:

And then it hit her… :newidea:

My poor, poor dad… :crossrc: 😃

LOL!!! Oh - that is just TOOOOOO funny!!!

:rotfl: :clapping:

During breakfast after Mass today, my 3 year old son asked my DH, “Do I have an ash on my head?” BUT, the “sh” sound came out more like “ss.” My DH almost died laughing…couldn’t even answer my son. I told him yes, you have an ash on your head while poor Daddy was still gasping for breath. 😛 😃

TOO FUNNY about ASH ->AS*:rotfl:

Not quite humor but …

I went up to the cathedral at 9.15 from work for mass (DS’s school mass).
As I get on the subway to get back to work, 2 people comment that “Oh no, today is Ash Wednesday” I smiled and say yes.
Then they talk among themselves quite loud “…why is it so early this year?.. … oh that is why … brought pancakes to work yesterday…”
Got back to work and got the look from a few people. And one actually asked me, “so is that mark because you are Hindu?” and I had to explain no I am Catholic…today is Ash wednesday…" Guess because I am Indian, I must be Hindu

this makes me feel bad since I’m feeling weird about going to class tonight and having to explain the ashes 😊.

Oh Gywn… I did that too. I figured since DH is Mexican it equaled to him being Catholic. WRONG… he’s a jehovah’s witness. That oughtta teach me :banghead:

One thing I have thought sort of funny this afternoon…being that this is my first Ash Wednesday working…I can’t believe how many people came by my office this afteroon to see if I had ashes. I was at a meeting that lasted through lunch, so no I didn’t get them. I’m realizing too how much those of us who are Catholic do talk about our faith here at work. Kind of nice.

And I’ll be taking the kids to get their ashes tonight anyhow…

I had lots of comments today at work. I work with special needs kids and I travel around, working with my kids for a 1/2 hour at a time. Most asked me “What’s wrong with your head”, one group of kids burst out laughing and pointing at my head when I walked in the room - thinking I was being funny. My reply to the ones that asked what happened was "I went to church this morning "and the funny thing is they would just say “oh” and that was the end of it.
Lots of adults also made comments telling me I had dirt or pen on my forehead. What I loved though is it reminded many that today is Ash Wednesday.

😃 aw! that is too cute!

Hmm…I fell left out this year!
I go to a Catholic college, so almost everyone had ashes. I guess the only funny thing about today was the Protestant minority who were mad that the cafeteria wasn’t serving meat today…oh the disappointment vegetarian pizza can bring to some!

I thought it was kind of funny how my classmates looked at me all weird and wondered “whatta heck happened to your forehead?” (including my teacher… they all thought I had some huge bruise :o) and then one classmate came to me and with her index finger on my forehead said “Oh, you’re Catholic, it’s Ash Wednesday! I have Catholic friends”… so everyone went “Ahhhhh, ash wednesday?” Some knew what it was, some still looked at me as if I were crazy. There are 2 other Mexican Catholics in my class but one took the ashes off before class and the other one was absent, so I was the only “brave” one. 😛

After Mass last night I had to go help out at a kids’ cultural event. The gal who’d been looking after the performers had to go to work and when I got there a woman I didn’t recognize was there. Turns out she’s a fellow parishioner but we don’t attend the same Mass so although I’d seen her once or twice, I didn’t recognize her. Her first comment on seeing my forehead, “I’m Michelle W. and as you can see I didn’t make it to Mass.”

I went to the store after taking the performers home and nobody blinked at the ashes. Around here, although less than 20% of the population is Catholic, less than 1% is non-Christian so people just know. When I said I couldn’t be at that performance until late the non-Catholic woman who did my job said 'Of course you can’t, it’s Ash Wednesday and you’re going to church."

I had to teach a couple of art classes at an art and music center last night. I actually kind of forgot about the ashes, since I’d gotten them early in the morning (by the evening, it was just one big smudge from me leaning my forehead on my hand 😛 ), so at first I couldn’t understand why my coworkers were looking over and smiling kinda funny at me. Then I remembered :o It was kind of neat seeing which of the kids in my classes were Catholic - or of one of the protestant denominations that do Ash Wednesday. At the end of one of the classes, one of the youngest students - 10yo - asked what Ash Wednesday was for. I tried to explain but the other kids basically spoke over me and gave the silly kid answers for it 🤷

Then later that night, I had choir practice (bunch of hungry people trying to sing; fun, right? 😃 ). Our choir director/organist is from the Church of the Nazarene, and he said the pastor there is going to be giving out ashes for the first time. And after choir practice, he’s going over there to help the pastor pack 😃 😃

My wife is one of those clean freaks. 🙂 So when the kids got into grade school, every night was bath night (at least during the week). When my daughter was in probably first grade, the Priest asked the kids something to the effect, “Why should we look forward to Ash Wednesday?”. My daughter held up her hand and said, “Because we get to skip our bath.” The Priest thought it was some kid connection that our sins are washed away with the ashes or some other type of misguided theological idea. While Father was explaining it, all I could do was laugh because she simply meant: Because her mother had to come to Mass tonight but I came during the school day, she knew I wouldn’t make the girls take baths.

Then they talk among themselves quite loud “…why is it so early this year?.. … oh that is why … brought pancakes to work yesterday…”
I’ve seen pancakes mentioned a few times in conjunction with Ash Wednesday, but have no idea why. Would someone care to explain?

Not humorous, necessarily, but the reactions I got at work fall into one of three categories:
a) I see you went to early Mass,
b) Oh, yeah, Ash Wednesday… I need to go tonight,
c) “Do you know you have dirt on your forehead?”
