So do you make any prayer when the priest or minister says one or both of the following when applying the ashes:

Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return.
—Genesis 3:19

Repent, and believe the Gospel.
—Mark 1:15

So do you make any prayer or do you say anything, when those words are said?

Chiefsinner asks : "So do you make any prayer when the priest or minister says one or both of the following when applying the ashes … ?"

Are you asking if I (personally) make any Prayer at that time?
Or, did you ask if a Parishioner SHOULD make a Prayer at that time?

Presently, there is NO requirement for a person (Catholic or Protestant) to offer up a Prayer at that moment.

And, I (personally) make a Prayer before the priest applies the Ashes.
At the actual time of “anointing” … I am focused on the Ritual (and am attempting to get the Maximum result of Ecstasy/Humility/Joy possible).

But, other people might get more out of the experience if they Pray.
For them, God bless you.
The Mission (should you decide to accept it) is to feel a profound rush of Spirituality at this moment.
Each person has his own idea of how to open himself up the most to that event.

No, nothing is said by those who come forward to receive the ashes.

They accept the words and ashes in all humility and return to their seats.

As 4love2God mentioned, silent prayer before and after is always good, to open yourself up to the grace of the moment, but audible prayer at the moment is not called for.
