What about Communion?
I want to abstain

There is no obligation to receive Communion every time one attends Mass.

Check your local parish schedules. There may be a service that’s just Liturgy of the Word and Distribution of Ashes. There are many of those that occur as well on Ash Wednesday to accommodate the number of people who want to attend for the same reasons such as yours.

Im afraid that maybe they will offer both…that will be extremely embarrassing…

Yes, you can only receive the ashes, that is what I did when I was not Catholic (Incidentally the first time I went to Mass on my own was Ash Wednesday). It also happens now when I am not ready for the Eucharist. No need to be embarrassed. There is no need to receive communion every time you are at Mass. You can either remain in the pews or go up and receive a blessing. If people think something because of that, that is their problem to work out with the Lord.

I once was at an Ash Wednesday Mass at a Catholic University, and after the ashes, the congregation halved. I guess a bunch of the students had class but still wanted to get ashes.

I’m not sure I understand how it would be embarrassing. Ashes are distributed after the homily; Communion is distributed at the regular time - it’s two separate processions to the front of the church. You can simply remain seated for the second.
