Did you get your ashes?
I cant! We have tornado watches and I am scared to drive in the rain. What do I do? Is it a sin?

I am so sorry. Praying for you and all those affected by the weather.

We’ve had so many around here killed just last night.

What do you do?

Read the readings for today. Pray. Fast. And spend your day spiritually like you would any other Ash Wednesday.

Maybe the weather will let up and you can attend Mass tonight?

God bless you! And keep an eye on that weather!

Ashes are a sacramental. It is not required that we receive ashes on Ash Wednesday therefore it is not a sin if we do not receive them.

Ash Wednesday is NOT a holy day of obligation. Although, ironically, Masses are usually better attended on this day than on most Holy Days!

Father made reference today to “CAPE Catholics” – “Christmas, Ash Wed, Palm Sunday, and Easter.” He welcomed us all but reminded us, particularly at this day which begins our great penetential season, we should NOT receive communion if we had missed any Sunday or Holy Day Masses without going to confession. Been a lot of years since I’ve heard a priest say that – I was real proud of him. Of course, at 6:15 a.m. Mass, he was mostly “preaching to the choir.” Bet he made the lunchtime crowd a tad uncomfortable, though.

you follow prudential procedure for a tornado warning and seek proper shelter

this is not a holy day of obligation, ashes are a sacramental, no more sinful to not have ashes than to not use holy water, wear a scapular, or put a medal around your neck

the advice would be the same even if it was a holy day, if there is a tornado watch, or other severe weather, and you can’t get to church, you stay put

aren’t there enough real sins to worry about without making up more for ourselves?
