I know of Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodist, and Presbyterian congregations which impose ashes. Don’t know if it’s denomination-wide, however.

Anglicanism not denomination wide. I know of several in my area who will not impose ashes. I go to the local catholic church. As my Rector does not impose ashes. And I am not allowed.

Thanks. I thought denominations other than Catholics did this but being married to a non practicing Baptist who once thought this was strictly a Catholic practice, I wanted to know which ones they were so I could relay the information.

All the liturgical ones do for the most part in my observations and cursory reading of the religion section of the paper! So Lutherans, ELCA specially I am not sure about Missouri Synod we do not have many of those, United Methodists, Episcopalians and Anglicans (continuing variety), and Presbyterian (USA). I also see a Disciple of Christ church that does as well.

It is much more common now amongst Lutherans in America than it was when I was young. I am LCMS and look forward to Ash Wednesday, and the imposition of ashes.

I’m looking forward to Ash Wednesday receiving my ashes, too. I used to go to an evening service but last year I went in the early afternoon and plan to do so again this year.
